" Above the mountain’s summit, a sky that does not belong to the night is turning. Across the steps that lead towards it, a golden light older than the stars appears to flow."

Starry Path

The Light Between the Stones

At the foot of the mountain, night had not yet fully arrived.

As the last of the daylight slowly withdrew from the faces of the jagged rocks, the coolness of the valley settled upon the stone steps. The moss surrounding the path had begun to release the moisture it had held throughout the day. The air carried the scent of wet stone, wild vegetation, and a cold wind descending from the heights.

The first step was broad and uneven. Fine cracks across its surface became dark lines reaching deep into the rock. Beneath one of them, a faint glow flickered. A second light then appeared along the edge of the stone.

It was golden.

It resembled neither moonlight nor a reflection left behind by the sun that had vanished beyond the mountain. It moved from within the stone, following a narrow line across the fractured surface of the step. Whenever the tips of the nearby moss touched its light, their green changed, turning amber for a few seconds.

As the path curved upwards, the glimmers multiplied. Small four-pointed stars shone upon the surfaces of several stones, while others trembled quietly in the darkness between the steps. Their light did not fall upon the ground or cast shadows around them. Each illuminated its own narrow space before retreating once more into the night.

High above, a shade of blue moved over the mountain’s pointed summit. Beside it, violet and rose-coloured light traced a slow circle. They were still distant, yet with every turn they left a pale reflection across the dark faces of the rocks.

The night below the mountain remained motionless.

The sky above it was turning.

The Curve Drawn by the Mountain

Beyond the first bend, the steps grew narrower.

The path continued beside a wall of dark rock, disappeared behind a sharp outcrop, then returned at a greater height. With every curve, the golden light became stronger. It no longer merely seeped between the stones. It moved along the edges of the steps in slender streams.

No water could be heard within the mountain. There were no calls from nocturnal birds, nor the rustle of small animals moving through the undergrowth. As the path rose, the sounds of the earth remained below. Only the tapping of loose stones beneath each footstep and the long murmur of wind passing between the rocks remained.

A golden star shone in the centre of one of the steps.

Its light did not flicker. It did not move like a flame or appear distant like the stars in the sky. It hovered a few centimetres above the stone, extending four slender rays into the air around it. Drawing near brought a gentle rise in temperature. Within the cold air, its warmth was as distinct as a small ember sheltered in the palm of a hand.

The star did not fade after it had been left behind.

Another appeared beyond the following bend. Then another.

The distances between them followed no order. They had not been arranged like lanterns marking the path. They seemed to have chosen for themselves upon which steps they would shine. One waited near the edge of a precipice, another glowed within a dark cleft in the rock, while another rested low enough to meet the passing of footsteps.

Looking down, the green covering at the foot of the mountain had become a single dark shadow. The first step could no longer be seen, and it was impossible to tell where the path had begun. Only the golden curve remained. It rose through the darkness, wound around the mountain and narrowed towards the summit.

The path did not appear to have been built upon the mountain.

The mountain seemed to have carried it within itself for a very long time.

Where the Night Grew Thin

As the path climbed higher, the wind changed direction.

The cool air rising from the valley disappeared. In its place came a lighter, drier current circling the summit. It struck the sharp edges of the rocks and bent the golden glimmers as it passed across the steps. The stars were not carried away by the wind, yet their rays stretched in the same direction for a few seconds.

The colour of the sky had changed as well.

Below the mountain, the night had been a dark and closed veil. Here, instead of deepening, the darkness was becoming transparent. Layers of blue light passed between distant stars. Violet clouds turned around one another, while lines of rose followed the course of an unseen current.

With every bend, the galaxy grew larger.

At first, it had appeared to be a distant light resting above the mountain. Now it occupied most of the sky, extending its outer arms into the depths of the night. The white brilliance at its centre was strong enough to resemble a sun on the verge of rising, yet it brought no daylight. One face of the mountain was illuminated by colour, while the other remained in darkness.

As the path approached the galaxy’s rotation, it lost its familiar incline. The steps no longer changed direction according to the horizontal surfaces of the rock. They seemed to curve around the light above. The trail moved east for several paces, suddenly turned north, crossed a narrow outcrop and then faced the centre of the galaxy once again.

The golden light between the stones had begun to move more quickly.

Slender lines joined together, forming a flowing path beneath the steps. The glow disappeared under one stone and returned to the surface several steps farther on. Small stars awakened wherever it passed and continued to shine even after the path had moved beyond them.

A faint vibration rose from the body of the mountain.

It could not be heard by the ear. It was a deep resonance felt through the stones beneath the feet, within the cold air and inside the chest. It carried the same rhythm as the galaxy’s slow rotation. With each turn, the mountain appeared to respond, and the golden line across the steps burned brighter for a moment.

At this height, the sky was not drawing nearer to the mountain.

The distance between them was disappearing.

The Turning Centre of the Sky

Beyond the final bend, the path emerged upon a narrow ridge.

Dark precipices extended on either side. Far below, the valley had vanished within the mountain’s shadow. The horizon could no longer be seen, and there was no way to tell where the earth ended and space began. Only the pointed summit, the golden steps and the galaxy turning above them remained.

From here, none of its colours stayed still.

Blue light moved along the galaxy’s outer edges before merging into violet. Rose-coloured currents turned white as they approached the centre, tracing delicate rings around its brilliant core. The distant stars were not carried along by this movement. Without leaving their places, they watched the coloured streams pass.

The centre of the galaxy turned in silence.

Yet its movement could be felt everywhere. The wind circled the rocks, the fine tips of the moss leaned in the same direction, and the rays of the stars along the path brightened one after another. Even the mountain’s shadow followed the rhythm of the rotation, shifting slowly across the stones.

Near the summit, the steps became smaller. The final stretch leading to the mountain’s pointed peak appeared almost suspended in the sky. Here, the golden light had emerged from beneath the stones and spread across their surfaces. Each step shone like heated metal, spilling small fragments of light over its edges.

The fragments did not fall into the precipice.

They remained in the air for a time, then took the shape of stars and settled into the darkness surrounding the mountain. The source of the lights along the path now seemed almost clear. Yet whenever the white brilliance at the galaxy’s centre intensified, the golden current reversed its direction and began to descend the steps.

For one moment, the path was feeding the galaxy.

In the next, the galaxy was illuminating the path.

The highest rock of the summit stood directly beneath the turning centre. There was no great distance between them. White light touched the tip of the rock, revealing the dark veins across its surface. It appeared that if the mountain rose any farther, it would enter the galaxy itself.

But beyond the final step, there was no other stone.

There was only light.

The Direction of the Light

At the summit, the wind fell silent.

The colours of the galaxy continued to turn, yet the air around the mountain remained still. The murmur had ceased, and the vibration within the stones had faded. The golden stars dimmed at the same moment. Beginning at the final step, the glow stretching along the path withdrew downwards.

First, the summit grew dark.

Then the light moved to the step below. It travelled across the surfaces of the rocks, following the curves of the path in reverse. Whenever it reached one of the stars, it waited briefly, merged with its glow and continued its descent with greater strength.

The foot of the mountain could not be seen, but the golden line was visible as it moved deeper into the darkness. The path had become a slender river disappearing into the night.

At that moment, the whiteness at the centre of the galaxy expanded.

The blue and rose-coloured arms paused for an instant. The stars across the sky grew faint. A single golden ray separated from the luminous centre, touched the pointed summit and reappeared upon the final step that had darkened moments before.

Then the second step shone.

Then the third.

This time, the light was neither descending nor rising from the foot of the mountain. It awakened across every curve of the path at once. The moss between the stones turned gold. Fine lines illuminated the dark surfaces of the rocks. Small stars opened one after another, forming an unbroken trail of light reaching all the way to the summit.

The galaxy continued to turn.

The mountain remained silent.

The path did not fade again for the rest of the night. Yet it was no longer possible to tell in which direction the light was flowing. Every glimmer appeared to be both ascending towards the summit and descending from it.

When dawn reached the valley, the moisture upon the moss became visible once more. The rocks returned to the pale light of morning. The colours withdrew from the sky, leaving an ordinary blue above the mountain’s summit.

The golden path had disappeared.

Only a small star continued to shine upon the final step.

Its light fell not upon the mountain, but upon a point in the sky that had yet to be named...
