Galaxy Gateway: Ascension to the Stars

The Gateway Without Walls

The gateway stood alone in the middle of a stone plain.

There was no wall surrounding it, no building rising behind it, and no path leading to its steps. Its dark structure rose in the form of two tall pillars, joined beneath a pointed arch. Slender spires reached from its crown into the dark sky, their golden tips marking the night like fine scratches.

Although the wind moved freely across the plain, it did not pass through the gateway. It bent the dry grass to its right, carried a fine layer of dust across the stones, and murmured among the rocky formations to its left. When it reached the open space beneath the arch, it stopped and did not continue on the other side.

For within the arch was a sky that did not belong to the rest of the night.

Clusters of blue light slowly expanded through the darkness, while violet and rose-coloured clouds merged along unseen currents. An orange radiance rose between them like the reflection of a distant fire cast upon the sky. More stars than could be counted appeared to fit within the gateway’s narrow frame.

The sky above the plain, however, was clear and still. Its stars were distant, pale and motionless.

Two separate nights could be seen at once.

One extended around the gateway. The other deepened within it.

The steps beginning beneath the arch ascended into this second night. The first three were broad, dark and heavy. Their surfaces were worn, and their edges were traced by a line of gold. The steps beyond them gradually narrowed, curved among the stars and disappeared near the orange light.

The view did not change when the gateway was approached from behind.

The same colours, the same stars and the same staircase remained visible within the arch. There was no distinction between its front and its back. From either direction, the steps appeared to rise into the distance.

It did not resemble an ancient ruin discovered during an ordinary hour of the night.

It seemed that the night had been concealing it for a very long time and had only now allowed it to be seen.

Lines of Gold

Drawing closer to the pillars revealed that the surface which appeared black was not a single colour.

Dark blue veins extended beneath the metal, and markings almost too fine to see lined the inner arch. The symbols resembled no known alphabet. They looked less like letters than the positions of stars across the sky, approaching orbits and circles left incomplete.

Golden ornamentation moved around these markings, climbed the bodies of the pillars and met at the centre of the pointed arch. Within the carving at its crown rested a dark, enclosed stone. It reflected none of the colours inside the gateway. Blue light passed across it and violet radiance touched its edges, yet its surface preserved its darkness.

The metal was not cold.

As one of the pillars was approached, the temperature of the air began to rise. It was a dry warmth that could be felt without touching the surface. It did not resemble the warmth of rock left beneath the sun. It moved through the depths of the metal at regular intervals.

First, a slender golden line appeared on the right pillar.

The light followed one of the engraved markings and travelled upwards. It stopped halfway along the arch. A second line then appeared on the left pillar. It climbed to the same height and joined the light opposite it.

The dark stone at the crown shone for the first time.

The cosmic clouds visible within the gateway slowed. Layers of blue separated from one another. The stars surrounding the orange light disappeared for an instant and reappeared farther away.

The wind across the plain fell silent.

Within the stillness, three separate sounds came from the depths of the metal. The first was long and low. The second was as clear as two delicate pieces of glass touching. The third could not be heard. Its presence was revealed by a vibration spreading through the stone ground before the gateway.

The golden line along the first step illuminated.

Then the second.

The light travelled upwards, revealing each step in turn. When it reached the final glimmer in the distance, one of the stars within the gateway changed position. A white point moved slowly across the darkness, came to rest above the staircase and remained there.

The gateway had not opened.

It had never been closed.

Yet the depth waiting beyond the threshold now appeared closer.

The First Step

The surface of the first step was warmer than expected.

The light gathered inside its golden edge, thinned towards the centre of the stone and formed a faint ring beneath the foot. The carvings across the step were clearer at close range. Interlocking orbits, star clusters and small circles with empty centres covered the entire surface.

Upon the second step, the scent of the stone plain disappeared.

The dry grass, cold stones and dust that had lingered in the air throughout the night gave way to an indescribably clean coolness. Breath remained invisible and the chest continued to rise at the same rhythm, yet the air came from no discernible direction.

Upon the third step, the sound of each footfall changed.

A hard strike against stone should have been followed by an echo. Instead, a brief vibration rose from the depths. The sound spread neither downwards, upwards nor to either side. It was drawn directly into the darkness within the gateway.

The fourth step stood level with the arch.

From there, the plain outside still appeared only a few steps away. The gateway’s dark pillars rose on either side, while dust carried by the wind traced fine lines across the stones. Every detail seemed close enough to reach.

With the next step, the plain moved away.

The distance had not simply increased by a few metres. The threshold had folded the stone ground backwards, placing it within a small and distant view. The rocky formations beyond the gateway had become a pale image framed by the arch. The movement of the wind remained visible, but its sound could no longer be heard.

The staircase ahead had expanded.

From outside, the steps had appeared close together. Now long spaces opened between them. Each hung separately in the darkness, its golden edge revealing its direction. There was no ground beneath them, nor any pillar, rope or visible support holding them in place.

Stars could be seen through the spaces between the steps.

Looking down revealed no falling depth. Instead, a distant sky opened below. Blue stars shone silently, violet light moved through the darkness, and far away an orange cloud continued to expand. There was no longer a horizon by which to determine direction.

The gateway’s frame was growing smaller behind.

Yet the threshold that had been crossed remained invisible. It was impossible to tell which step had left the outside night behind. The first still seemed to belong to the stone plain. The next was suspended among the stars.

There was no boundary between them.

Ascension to the Stars

The staircase did not follow a straight line through the cosmic expanse.

For a time, it climbed towards clusters of blue stars, then curved widely around a violet cloud. As it approached the orange radiance, the surfaces of the steps became thinner, and the dark stone turned into a transparent substance. Their golden edges retained the warmth of the first step.

Here, the direction of gravity was determined by the staircase.

Whenever a foot touched a step, the space beneath it became down. When the next step turned at a different angle, the entire sky changed direction with it. Distant stars passed overhead, blue clouds moved beneath the feet, and the orange light appeared ahead once more several steps later.

There was no sensation of dizziness.

The body accepted the direction of the steps as though it were the natural order of the world.

The staircase passed close to a vast sphere of blue light. The radiance that had appeared small and calm from afar became a sea of gas with no visible boundaries. Dark openings formed within it, white lights intensified, and long blue currents extended into the surrounding expanse.

No sound could be heard.

Among the stars, there was a silence unlike any silence on Earth. It did not resemble the stillness left when the wind stopped or when a room stood empty. It was a silence in which sound had yet to exist, where distances had widened beyond the reach of vibration.

When the staircase entered the rose and violet clouds, their colours were not as gentle as they had appeared from afar. Fine layers of light passed through one another, and dark crimson veins emerged between them. Every glow reflected along the golden edges of the steps, forming brief patterns across their dark surfaces.

Farther above, the orange cloud waited.

Its flame-shaped arms turned through the expanse, while the white light at its centre drew the staircase towards it. As the steps approached, they did not grow smaller. They dissolved into the light and lost their form. Beyond the last visible step, it was impossible to tell whether the staircase continued.

Looking back revealed that the ancient gateway was now very far away.

Yet it had not grown smaller.

It stood at the same size among the stars, framing the cosmic expanse with its dark pillars and golden arch. The stone plain should have been visible within it. Instead, another view appeared. A blue planet turned slowly beneath white clouds. Its mountains and oceans were distant enough to fit inside the gateway’s opening.

The stone plain had disappeared.

The gateway no longer opened onto the place that had been left behind.

It opened onto a far greater distance.

The Other Side of the Gateway

The final step before the orange cloud was covered in light.

There were no carvings or cracks across its surface. The gold reflected the surrounding stars, and each reflection moved to a different position a few seconds later. Along the edge of the step, one of the symbols seen upon the gateway’s pillars was shining.

A circle with an empty centre.

The darkness within the symbol began to expand. At first, it was a small shadow. Then it spread across the surface of the step and divided the golden light in two. A pointed line appeared at the centre of the shadow. It extended upwards, opened to either side and took the form of the familiar arch.

A second gateway had not appeared.

The shadow of the first gateway, standing far behind, had fallen across the final step.

Yet between them lay countless stars, vast nebulae and an expanse too immense to measure. No shadow could have crossed such a distance. Still, the outline of the dark arch rested perfectly upon the golden surface.

The stone plain began to appear within the shadow.

Dry grass bent in the wind, and fine dust moved between the stones. The night sky was clear and motionless. Yet the place where the gateway had stood was empty. There were no marks from its pillars upon the ground, no raised stone where the staircase had begun and no hollow left by the weight of the metal.

The gateway did not appear to have been removed.

It appeared never to have stood there at all.

The arch among the distant stars darkened. Golden lines faded downwards from the tops of its pillars. The blue planet withdrew from its opening and was replaced by a deep emptiness. Then the dark structure became transparent.

Only its golden outline remained.

The outline slowly narrowed, became as small as a distant star and disappeared into the darkness.

The shadow upon the final step remained.

Dawn was beginning across the stone plain visible within it. A pale blue colour appeared along the horizon, while the first light gathered upon the tips of the dry grass. The wind could not be heard, but its movement could still be seen.

A golden glimmer appeared at the bottom of the shadow.

First, a single step emerged. Then a second appeared above it. This time, the staircase was not rising from the stone plain towards the stars. It was descending from the cosmic expanse towards the first light of morning.

The gateway could no longer be seen anywhere.

The passage remained open.

The world never discovered on which side of it it had been left...
