Cosmic Hourglass

The Hourglass That Holds Two Cosmic Realms

The hourglass’s dark wooden frame held two cosmic realms between four tall pillars.

Golden light moved through the fine carvings upon the pillars, while the dark, polished wood of the upper and lower bases reflected the glimmer of nearby stars. Small points of light scattered around the glass shone in different colours. Some were blue and sharp, others orange and warm, while several were so faint that their distance could not be measured.

A great galaxy was turning in the upper chamber.

Orange rings expanded around its brilliant core and merged with blue cosmic clouds along its outer reaches. Planets moved at different heights around the galaxy, while clusters of stars filled the darkness between them with slender lines of light.

The lower chamber held warmer colours.

A dark-centred celestial body rested within dense rings of gold. Planets of different sizes moved around it, while blue stars shone between currents of orange. Instead of gathering at the bottom of the chamber, golden dust traced wide curves around the dark centre.

At first glance, the cosmos in the upper chamber appeared to be flowing downwards.

A dark current formed beneath the galaxy, narrowed towards the neck of the hourglass and sent a fine line of light into the chamber below. Yet when the movement was observed for longer, another current became visible.

Part of the golden dust in the lower chamber was not falling.

After circling the dark centre, the particles approached the left edge of the glass and joined a broad arm of light rising upwards. As they neared the narrow passage, the spaces between them diminished until they merged into a river of orange.

One current descended through the centre.

The other climbed along the edge.

The hourglass neither emptied the upper chamber nor filled the lower one. A continuous circulation moved between the two cosmic realms. With every passage, a low vibration travelled through the pillars, and the reflections of the stars upon the glass briefly changed position.

The chambers appeared to be separate.

Yet every movement within one received an answer from the other.

The Orbits of the Upper Chamber

The galaxy in the upper chamber was not an image placed inside the glass.

The warmth from its brilliant centre reached the surfaces of nearby planets, while currents of blue gas moved along the chamber’s curved wall. The stars surrounding the galaxy rested at different depths, and the darkness behind them extended far beyond the boundaries of the glass.

A small blue planet travelled close to the orange rings. Each time it passed, it briefly concealed the galaxy’s light, and a fine golden line appeared across its darkened side. Farther above, a rose-coloured planet moved slowly between clouds of blue.

Above the galaxy rested a blue ring with a dark centre.

The surrounding light did not spread outwards. It curved in. The radiance of nearby stars lengthened into narrow arcs around the blue ring. None reached the centre. At a certain distance, each changed direction and continued along its orbit.

The first golden particles rising from the lower chamber moved towards this ring.

After passing through the narrow neck, they did not scatter across the galaxy. They followed the inner edge of the glass, rose behind the rose-coloured planet and entered a wide orbit around the blue centre.

Their golden light changed colour near the ring.

First, it turned white. Then a cold blue appeared within it. Some of the particles began to shine like small stars, while the rest spread into a fine cloud surrounding the dark centre.

The blue ring appeared brighter with every new particle.

Yet it did not expand, draw the galaxy towards itself or disturb the planets’ orbits. Instead of holding the golden light it received, it sent it back in another form.

A fine, colourless ray separated from the centre of the ring.

It passed above the galaxy first. As it approached the great orange rings, it took on a warm golden colour. While moving through the blue cosmic clouds, it left pale trails behind. By the time it reached the space beneath the galaxy, it had become a slender current carrying the reflections of the stars.

The light moved towards the neck of the hourglass.

As particles from the lower chamber rose, the dark centre above sent another light down to meet them.

Two currents were approaching the same passage.

Where the Currents Meet

The neck of the hourglass was the shortest distance between the two chambers.

It was also the greatest distance within them.

The descending light grew thinner, leaving the galaxy’s colours behind. The warmth of the orange rings, the cold glow of the blue clouds and the dark shadows of the planets were compressed into a single line.

The rising stardust turned along the edge of the glass.

The golden particles reached the narrow passage.

The light descended.

The dust rose.

Almost no space remained between them.

Yet they did not touch.

The vertical light travelled through the centre of the passage, while the golden particles formed a fine spiral around it. With every turn, they drew closer to the light, then moved back towards the glass. A downward current formed at the centre, surrounded by an upward orbit.

Two different vibrations passed through the neck of the hourglass.

The first was a deep, continuous hum travelling downwards with the light from above. The second was as clear as the sound of delicate pieces of metal touching. Each golden particle left a brief note as it rose.

The sounds did not merge within the passage.

One descended into the lower chamber.

The other climbed into the upper chamber.

For a short while, both currents moved at the same speed. Every rotation of the golden spiral matched the pulse of the central light. All the carvings upon the hourglass’s four pillars illuminated at once.

A white star appeared within the narrow neck.

It was impossible to tell whether it had descended from above or risen from below. It remained between the two currents, extending eight fine rays into the space around it. The vertical beam passing through its centre did not divide it, and the golden dust turning nearby never touched its surface.

The star remained in the same place for several seconds.

Then four of its rays pointed towards the upper chamber, while the other four turned towards the chamber below. Its white centre divided into two separate glimmers.

One travelled upwards.

The other descended.

The two chambers received the light of the same star from opposite directions.

The Golden-Ringed Core

When the descending glimmer entered the lower chamber, the dark centre responded.

The golden ring surrounding it contracted first. Orange currents were drawn inwards, and the surfaces of nearby planets briefly darkened. Then a powerful light rose from within the ring.

The entire lower chamber turned gold.

Fine particles moving around the dark centre became visible. They outnumbered the stars. Some travelled slowly along wide orbits, others traced tight rings close to the centre, while several formed small vortices around the planets.

The light from the upper chamber did not reach the surface of the dark sphere.

It stopped just above the surrounding ring and spread outwards. Golden particles rose towards it. Every grain entering the glow accelerated, leaving a long trail behind.

The current completed one revolution around the centre.

Then a second.

On its third turn, it moved beyond the ring and expanded towards the curved surface of the glass. It did not draw the nearby planets into itself. Instead, it passed around them and left luminous lines revealing their orbits.

A golden arc appeared beneath a blue planet. A fine ring formed around an orange sphere. Farther away, a small red celestial body shone white for a moment as the current passed.

The particles did not stop when they reached the bottom of the chamber.

They made a broad turn just above the dark base. Golden light flowed around the bottom of the glass, then joined the great spiral rising along the left side. With every new particle, the spiral grew stronger and moved towards the narrow neck.

The structure at the centre of the lower chamber did not store the light descending from above.

It gave the light direction.

When the dark centre remained still, the golden dust moved along scattered orbits. When light from the upper chamber reached it, every particle joined the same current, circled the chamber and turned upwards.

A low hum spread from the centre during this movement.

The sound vibrated through the glass and illuminated the golden lines upon the pillars in sequence. The lower sections shone first. The light then climbed and met within the upper frame.

With every vibration, the ring around the dark sphere became more distinct.

The centre preserved its darkness.

Yet within it, a distant blue light opened.

The Stars That Flow Upwards

The golden current continued to rise along the left edge of the glass.

The particles left no emptiness behind as they departed the lower chamber. New lights appeared around the dark centre, and the broad spiral at the bottom retained its intensity. Whenever one particle left its orbit to join the rising current, another appeared in its place.

The vertical beam was still descending when the particles reached the narrow passage.

Once again, the two currents moved around one another.

The golden dust entered the upper chamber.

First, it passed into the blue clouds beneath the galaxy. The particles slowed, expanded and drifted apart. Some moved towards the galaxy’s outer rings, while others scattered into the darkness between the planets.

Most continued towards the blue-ringed centre.

The ring bent their paths as they approached. Golden lines lengthened into arcs and formed an almost perfect circle around the darkness. Whenever a particle took its place within the orbit, a new star appeared in the blue light.

The golden-ringed core below vibrated at the same moment.

The blue light within its darkness expanded. At first, it was a small point. Then it took on the form of the dark centre in the upper chamber. A fine blue ring opened around it.

The light of the centre above began to change.

When the final particles from the lower chamber entered its orbit, the blue radiance faded. A warm yellow appeared in its place. The dark centre began to carry the same golden ring as the celestial body below.

For a time, the two centres looked alike.

A dark core surrounded by golden light rested above.

Another core surrounded by blue light waited below.

Their colours had exchanged places.

The planets’ orbits remained unchanged. The great galaxy continued to turn. The golden spiral in the lower chamber traced another circle around the base. The vertical light descended through the centre while stardust rose once more along the glass.

The hourglass had not been turned.

The chambers had not exchanged places.

Yet the light of the upper cosmos had passed below, and the light of the lower cosmos had travelled above. It was no longer possible to tell which had given and which had received.

The white star appeared again within the narrow neck.

This time, it did not divide.

It remained a single glimmer and turned silently at the centre of the glass. The golden core in the upper chamber and the blue centre below intensified their light at the same moment, facing one another from opposite sides of the star.

Another golden particle reached the upper chamber.

Another fine beam descended.

The two chambers did not separate.

The boundary between them disappeared within the currents.

The hourglass was not holding two separate cosmoses.

The same universe was looking back at itself from opposite ends of the glass...
