Within the Darkness

The Cloud Beyond the Reach of Light

The cloud had no distinct outer boundary.

Deep blue layers merged with the surrounding space, while fine streams of gas passed in front of the stars and gradually dimmed their light. From outside, it appeared to be a vast region of darkness. A few faint stars could be seen around its edges, but every light disappeared closer to the interior.

The cloud was not a starless void.

It was formed from gas and dust so dense that light could not pass through it. The stars behind it continued to burn, but their radiance could not reach beyond the dark layers.

The temperature was low across the outer regions.

Currents of gas moved silently through one another, and as fine particles of dust shifted, the shades of darkness changed. One region approached deep blue while the layer beside it appeared black. With no shadow or light to define the distance between them, the depth of the cloud could not be measured.

As the view moved farther inside, the direction of the stars was lost.

The lights left behind first became faint points, then disappeared completely beyond the blue layers. Darkness was not above, below or ahead. It extended with the same density in every direction.

A low vibration passed through the cloud.

It was not a sound. The movement of gas layers across immense distances could be felt as a heavy pressure within the surrounding space. The motion was too slow to be noticed at close range, but when distant regions were compared, the outer edges of the cloud appeared to be gradually drawing inwards.

Gas and dust were moving towards the interior.

Particles that had once been separated first turned in the same direction. Then the fine currents joined together and formed denser layers. The cloud was not shrinking. Its matter was gathering within an unseen region at its centre.

There was no light in the very heart of the darkness.

Yet every movement was leading towards it.

The Density at the Centre of the Darkness

The cold began to diminish closer to the centre.

Gas that had remained dull and heavy in the outer layers moved more quickly within. Particles travelled around the unseen centre, drawing slightly closer with every passage. As streams of dust collided, they changed direction and traced broad rings through the darkness.

The rings gave off no light.

Their presence could only be recognised when they briefly concealed the faint glimmers behind them. A star would appear, vanish as a dark current crossed in front of it, then emerge again somewhere else.

The density at the centre increased.

The spaces between the layers of gas narrowed. Matter arriving from outside slowed and gathered, its weight compressing the inner region even further. Darkness was no longer merely the absence of light. It had become a dense volume closing in upon itself.

The low vibration grew stronger.

The blue layers at the top of the cloud bent towards the centre. A long current of gas on the right divided in two and approached the same dark region from different directions. Below, particles of dust rotated into a tightening ring.

The temperature inside was rising.

At first, only the movement of the dark layers became faster. Then a dim redness opened at the centre, too faint to be seen clearly. It did not illuminate its surroundings and remained enclosed beneath the dense gas.

After a time, the redness approached white.

The vibration passing through the cloud began to repeat at regular intervals. Each pulse travelled outwards from the centre and pushed the layers of gas slightly back when it reached them. Then the inward pull strengthened again and the layers returned.

The darkness expanded and contracted.

After every movement, the whiteness at the centre grew stronger, yet it could find no way out. The layers of gas and dust above absorbed the light and scattered its brightness before it could travel more than a short distance.

Then a thin line opened in the centre of the cloud.

At first, the line was vertical. As it extended upwards and downwards, it traced the edges of the surrounding dark layers in white. Then a second line crossed it horizontally.

The darkness at the centre divided in four directions.

White light passed through it.

The First White Light

The light had not come from outside the cloud.

It had begun within the gas that had long been gathering in the darkness, where the temperature had continued to rise. When the white core became visible, the dense layers surrounding it withdrew. As particles of dust moved away from the light, an open space appeared at the centre.

For the first time, the star could be seen in full.

Its boundaries could not be distinguished when viewed directly. The white core filled the surrounding gas with the same colour, while fine rays emerging from its outer layers extended in different directions through the cloud.

The longest ray travelled upwards.

It narrowed when it reached a dense layer of gas, then passed through a fine opening and entered the upper part of the cloud. The ray extending downwards moved more slowly, leaving a long, straight trace between the deep blue layers.

The horizontal rays struck the surrounding ring of dust.

The surface facing the centre shone white. The region behind it appeared darker than before. The light did not remove every layer of the cloud. It revealed their edges and the distances between them.

For the first time, the depth within could be understood.

Blue layers once believed to be close were shown to lie far away. Darkness that had appeared to be a single surface was revealed as a succession of overlapping currents of gas. Between their illuminated edges, the spaces within the cloud opened into long passages.

The light of the star travelled through them.

Whenever it reached another layer, one region brightened and a new shadow formed behind it. The darkness did not disappear. It changed position. Previously unseen areas emerged while deeper regions beyond them closed again.

The outer edges of the cloud took on shades of white and pale blue.

Where the light was strongest, the layers of gas appeared as soft curves. Farther away, dark veins passed between them.

The star at the centre trembled once more.

The light spreading from its core was stronger than before. Small white points that had long remained hidden within the cloud became visible one after another.

First, several lights appeared close to the star.

Then hundreds emerged across the darker upper layers, along the sides and within the dense regions below.

The cloud had never been without stars.

The light had merely revealed their presence for the first time.

The Stars Made Visible

The smaller stars did not all lie at the same distance.

Several of the lights that appeared close to the white star at the centre were located within far deeper layers of the cloud. Their light passed through narrow gaps between the gas and dust, scattering across several different layers before it became visible.

Certain stars were sharp white points.

Others appeared as faint patches illuminating the gas around them. The light of the most distant stars flickered within the blue layers, vanishing briefly whenever the cloud moved.

The central star continued to widen its light.

The ring of dust around it drew back, and fine particles gathered along the edges of the newly opened space. When the star’s rays reached these particles, they divided into hundreds of smaller glimmers. The fragments followed short paths through the darkness before disappearing again.

A broad field of stars opened in the upper region of the cloud.

The gas layers there were thinner. The light of each small star could be seen without merging into the others, while dark regions stretched between them like long paths.

Yet there was an unnatural direction within their arrangement.

Farther from the central white star, the smaller lights began to form a narrow arc. They appeared to be scattered at random when seen individually, but from a greater distance, they curved around the same region.

That region lay in the upper part of the cloud.

There was no star there.

The light of the great white star extended upwards, but weakened when it reached the place where the deep blue layers converged. The smaller stars around it made their light visible along the edges of that dark region.

One star brightened.

Rather than spreading towards the centre, its light left a fine line extending towards the darkness above. Then a second star on the right side of the cloud grew brighter in the same direction.

Then a third.

The flashes were not regular. Long silences lay between them, and certain lights appeared only once. Yet after every gleam, the boundary of the dark region above became slightly more distinct.

The central star released its strongest light.

The vertical ray passed through the upper layers of the cloud and reached the dark region. The white line did not end there.

It bent inwards.

It was as though the light had been drawn into an unseen depth.

The Centre the Light Did Not Face

The movement of the cloud changed.

The layers of gas moving away from the white star at the centre slowed as they approached the dark region above. Then they changed direction and formed a broad curve around it.

The newborn star had illuminated the space surrounding it.

Yet the entire cloud was not moving around that star.

The boundaries of the dark region above could not be defined by light. When the white ray entered it, the light weakened and no reflection returned. The smaller stars formed a narrow ring around it, revealing the location of the unseen centre only indirectly.

A dense layer of gas might have been concealed there.

It might also have been a cold mass of dust through which no light could pass.

Yet the other dark regions of the cloud revealed their edges when the light of the star reached them. This region offered no boundary at all.

The white star at the centre slowed its vibration.

Its brightness did not fade. The long rays around it narrowed and became sharper. The line extending upwards turned once more towards the dark region.

This time, the smaller stars answered together.

Hundreds of white points brightened across every layer of the cloud. Their light briefly made the deep blue gas transparent. In a single moment, the curves of the nebula, the passages between the stars and the streams of dust moving away from the centre became visible.

Every light converged around the darkness above.

The great star at the centre was the brightest.

But it was not the first.

A very faint vibration spread from the dark region in the upper part of the cloud. It was too weak to be seen as light. Its presence was revealed only when the smaller stars surrounding it dimmed at the same moment.

The vibration travelled downwards.

It passed through the layers of gas without illuminating them. When it reached the white star at the centre, the star’s long rays briefly drew inwards. A fine blue ring appeared around the bright core.

Then the star opened again.

This time, its light was not spreading only outwards. Within the white core rested a pale reflection of the darkness above.

The outer edges of the cloud began to expand.

The heat of the new star pushed the surrounding gas away, while passages opening through the dark layers revealed more of the star field. Small lights now burned across hundreds of different depths.

Still, the upper region remained dark.

The central star could not illuminate it.

The smaller stars did not leave the arc surrounding it.

When a final vibration passed through the cloud, the light of the white star filled the entire cosmic region. The edges of the nebula shone silver, particles of dust left brief traces through the darkness and even the most distant stars became visible.

Within the darkness above, a single point opened.

It was not white.

It was not blue.

Deep within the place beyond the reach of light was a faint glow that appeared older than every star around it.

The white star at the centre sent a ray towards it.

The glow gave no answer.

But every small star within the dark cloud moved slightly closer at the same moment...
