But across the black screen, the thin white line suddenly rose, leaving a series of irregular pulses for several seconds before flattening once again. Two minutes and fifteen seconds later, the same movement returned. The antenna was still pointed towards Deep Field Sector C7..."


Silent Transmission

The Line That Broke the Silence

Three hours had passed since the beginning of the night shift.

The lights in the main room of the radio observatory were kept low. Small indicators across the control panels glowed as green and pale orange points within the darkness. A steady electrical hum came from the instruments arranged along the wall, while cold air passing through the ventilation ducts gently disturbed the corners of the papers spread across the desks.

Outside, the sky was clear.

But the station's main telescope was not observing the stars through light.

The broad metal dish rose silently from the dark landscape. Its surface had cooled throughout the night, and fine drops of moisture had gathered along its edges. The receiver system at the centre of the dish collected radio waves arriving from the sky and carried the invisible frequencies through cables into the control room.

A routine deep-field scan was being conducted that night.

The sky had been divided into designated sectors.

Each sector was listened to for several minutes before the antenna shifted by a few degrees towards the next set of coordinates.

There were no stars on the screens.

Instead, there were lines.

Frequency bands.

Intensity readings.

Waveforms changing over time.

And, most often, only static.

The radio silence of space was not entirely silent.

There were low-frequency emissions from distant stars.

There was faint noise from the background of the galaxy.

There were irregular signals passing through the upper layers of the atmosphere.

From time to time, traces of sources on Earth also reached the system from far beyond the station.

Most of them were recognised.

Each left a different pattern across the display.

As the hours passed, the antenna turned towards a new region.

The sector name was entered onto the recording card.

DEEP FIELD SECTOR: C7

The main display refreshed.

For several seconds, nothing changed.

The white line moved across the black background with only small fluctuations.

Then it rose.

Suddenly.

A short, concentrated group of waves appeared along the left side of the screen.

Then a second pulse.

A third.

For several seconds, the signal continued in an irregular pattern.

The static inside the control room did not change.

No tone came through the speaker.

There was no rhythm.

No audible sound.

Only the line on the screen was moving.

Then the signal stopped.

The waveform returned to an almost level line.

The time was recorded.

The receiver was checked.

The cables were inspected.

A local electrical source might have entered the system.

But no fault appeared in the instruments.

The antenna remained fixed on the same coordinates.

A new recording was started.

A time marker appeared beneath the display.

T+00:00:00

The silence continued.

Thirty seconds.

One minute.

Two minutes.

Then:

T+00:02:15

The white line rose again.

The same irregular pulses.

Almost the same intensity.

The same duration.

And once again, nothing could be heard through the speakers.

Deep Field Sector C7

The movement of the antenna was stopped.

Sector C7 was removed from the normal scanning sequence and placed under fixed observation.

The source map was brought to the table.

Circular coordinate lines covered the thick, pale paper. A small marker stood at the centre, surrounded by black points and star symbols of different sizes.

At the top were the words:

SOURCE MAP

and directly beneath them:

DEEP FIELD SECTOR: C7

The first estimated coordinates were recorded.

RA 13h 27m 11.2s

DEC -45° 22' 37"

The distance reading supplied by the measurement system was added below.

DIST. 2.3 GLY

At such a distance, identifying a source was difficult.

Although the radio antenna appeared to be receiving the signal from a single point, countless celestial bodies lay within the region covered by the beam.

The stars surrounding the centre of the source map were marked one by one.

Some were already catalogued.

Others were so faint that they could only be distinguished in deep-field images.

Earlier optical observations of Sector C7 were opened.

A dark star field appeared.

Thousands of small points of light.

Some white.

Some fainter.

Some occupied no more than a single grain of light on the imaging plate.

The region surrounding the star nearest to the central coordinates was marked.

On the large star chart, fine broken lines intersected at this position.

A broad circle was drawn around it.

Smaller reference rings were added.

But there was no unusual structure visible in the image.

No bright outburst.

No new star.

No obvious change within the surrounding gas.

The optical sky was quiet.

The radio recording, however, was waiting for a third pulse.

Four minutes and thirty seconds after the first signal, the line rose again.

This time, every instrument was recording.

The beginning of the waveform was compared with the previous two records.

It was not identical.

But it was similar.

The first section contained dense, short pulses.

The signal weakened through the middle.

Several sharp rises appeared near the end before the line quickly returned to the silent level.

The three recordings were placed side by side.

Each showed almost the same interval.

Two minutes and fifteen seconds.

Two minutes and fifteen seconds.

The second hand of the clock on the control-room wall continued to move.

A new recording sheet was prepared.

The fifth minute passed.

The sixth began.

No one watching the screen spoke.

The line moved again.

Within the Frequency

A broad frequency scan was started to confirm the source of the signal.

The receiver moved upwards from the lower band.

30 MHz.

3000 MHz.

Each range was measured separately.

Most contained only background noise.

Weak traces of Earth-based transmissions appeared at several frequencies and were filtered out.

But within a particular band, the C7 signal returned.

Narrow.

Stable.

Strong enough to stand clearly above the background.

Receiver information was written beside the frequency panel.

RECEIVER GAIN

NODE: KARRON BAND

POLAR.: LINEAR

The antenna was moved several degrees away.

The signal weakened.

It was turned farther.

The signal almost completely disappeared.

The dish returned to the C7 coordinates.

When the next pulse arrived, the line rose again.

The source was in the sky.

It was not a local instrument.

Not a nearby station.

Not the electrical system of the control building.

The signal returned only when the antenna was directed towards one particular dark region.

Yet the speaker remained silent.

The frequency data was transferred to the audio channel.

The gain was slowly increased.

First came a faint crackle.

Then a low hum.

Then static again.

Even when the signal rose clearly on the display, no distinct audible tone could be separated by the human ear.

There was a waveform.

There was energy.

There was a repeating interval.

But there was no audible message.

Sector C7 remained under observation as the hours passed.

The intervals were no longer identical.

The first four recordings had been remarkably regular.

Then the delays began.

One pulse arrived after two minutes and fifteen seconds.

The next after two minutes and eighteen seconds.

Another was recorded two minutes and twelve seconds later.

The intervals were shifting by small amounts.

The source might be moving.

The rotation of the Earth was taken into account.

The antenna tracking system was corrected.

There were also minute shifts in the frequency of the signal.

Each new pulse appeared several units away from the position of the one before it.

The change did not appear random.

The source was not fixed.

Either it was moving.

Or the signal was passing through another influence during the vast distance it travelled before reaching the receiver.

New calculations were made.

The centre point on the C7 map was adjusted.

One of the circular lines on the large star plate was removed.

A broader arc was drawn in its place.

The probable location of the source was marked within a small ring.

Across the dark field, there were still only stars.

Yet the instruments continued to record an invisible movement arriving from the same region.

The Silence Between the Pulses

After midnight, the temperature outside the station fell further.

A thin layer of moisture formed across the metal body of the antenna. The steps of the service platform had become slippery in the cold.

Inside the control room, the scent of coffee mixed with the faint metallic smell of warm electronic components.

Long recording strips emerging from the printer hung over the edge of the table.

Signal graphs were stacked one above another.

Some contained dense pulses.

Others held only a fine line.

Sector C7 had been under observation for hours.

At first, every new pulse had drawn everyone in the room towards the screen.

Now the waiting felt different.

No one knew whether the signal would return.

The seconds continued to pass as the instruments listened to the same dark coordinates.

A recording began.

One minute passed.

Two minutes.

Three.

There was no movement.

The fourth minute.

The fifth.

Apart from small background fluctuations, the waveform remained flat.

The antenna position was checked.

It was correct.

The frequency scan was repeated.

Nothing changed.

During the sixth minute, a faint rise appeared.

The line moved briefly.

But it never reached the intensity of the earlier pulses.

Then it disappeared again.

Only two words were written on the new recording sheet:

WEAK RETURN

The next signal arrived eleven minutes later.

It was brief.

Weaker than those recorded before it.

The opening section of the waveform could still be distinguished, but the final pulses dissolved into the background noise.

The receiver gain was increased.

It made no difference.

A new position was calculated on the source map.

The antenna made several small corrections.

Still, nothing changed.

The signal was fading.

Towards morning, the eastern side of the star field began to approach the horizon.

The C7 coordinates remained within the antenna's range, but the observation window was narrowing.

When the final strong pulse arrived, every recording system in the control room was active.

The white line on the display rose suddenly.

The first section was more intense than the previous signals.

Then the waveform rapidly narrowed.

A long gap appeared in the middle.

Then three short rises.

One.

Two.

Three.

The line fell.

Only static still came through the speaker.

The recording continued.

One minute.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

The signal did not return.

The entire frequency range was scanned again.

From 30 MHz to 3000 MHz.

There was no result.

The antenna was directed towards nearby coordinates surrounding C7.

Silence.

The stars on the source map were checked one by one.

Silence.

The antenna returned to the original coordinates.

Silence.

Shortly before sunrise, the eastern horizon began to brighten.

Through the small window of the control room, the black sky was turning deep blue.

C7 was still above the horizon.

But the signal was gone.

The time was written beneath the final recording strip.

A small circle was drawn beside it.

And the recording was stopped.

Signal Archive

The following day, all of the data was gathered across a separate table.

The long waveform strip recorded throughout the night was opened first.

Pale pulses rose across its black surface.

Dense at the beginning.

Then intermittent.

Gradually weaker towards the end.

Time markers ran along the lower edge of the strip.

Later measurements had been transferred onto separate recording sheets.

The frequency panel was placed beside the waveform strip.

A technical drawing of the radio dish, the scanning range used during the observation and the receiver information all appeared on the same plate.

At the bottom was a small indicator.

SIGNAL LOCK

It had been lit during the first strong recording.

By morning, it was dark.

The Source Map was placed on the left side of the table.

The coordinate rings of C7 remained across the paper.

A small dark point at the centre.

Star markings around it.

Right ascension and declination readings below.

And the distance record.

When the large star-field plate was opened, C7 appeared again exactly as it had during the night.

Thousands of small stars covered the dark surface.

Broken lines met at the central coordinates, while broad arcs surrounded the probable source region.

Nothing visible on the plate could explain the signal.

There was only the sky.

In the radio record, however, the same region looked entirely different.

Pulses.

Frequency shifts.

Intervals of time.

And, finally, silence.

The records were marked as belonging to the same observation.

The waveform strip was secured to a long piece of fabric.

The source map, with its pale surface, was placed within a separate section.

The large star plate was fixed onto dark fabric.

The frequency panel remained at the lower left.

The small waveform record carrying the final weak signal was preserved separately.

Threads were passed around the edges of the papers.

Metal eyelets were used in several sections.

Thin pieces of fabric were added behind the plates.

Small leather supports remained at the corners.

No record was completely covered by another.

Each remained readable.

Because there was no single answer to explain the signal.

There were only different measurements.

Finally, a small archive label was prepared.

At the top were written:

OBS. /

SIGNAL ARCHIVE

The lower section was left empty.

After a while, the final lines were added.

PLATE:

SILENT

TRANSMISSION

The label was tied to the main group of records with thread.

That night, the antenna was directed towards C7 once again.

The same coordinates.

The same frequency range.

The same receiver settings.

The station listened for several hours.

No signal arrived.

The following night, the observation was repeated.

Again, nothing was recorded.

A week later, C7 was scanned once more.

The background noise was normal.

A month later, the old coordinates were opened again.

The silence continued.

The star field in the sky appeared unchanged.

The bright star near the centre was still in the same position.

The smaller points of light around it remained as well.

The lines on the source map were still valid.

Only the signal was absent.

Inside the archive room, however, the records from that first night remained.

The pulses still rose across the long waveform strip.

On the frequency panel, the antenna was still directed towards C7.

The source remained marked at the centre of the map.

On the final small graph, the weak signal was still visible across the paper.

The sky had never sent it again.

But the record had never released the first transmission...
