The Dome Opens to the Night
The observatory dome opened shortly before midnight.
As the metal shutters moved through the heavy mechanism, a long, muted scraping sound travelled through the interior of the dome. The air entering from outside was cold. The warmth that had gathered across the stone floor during the day had already disappeared, and the wind passing through the open gap gently lifted the corners of the papers spread across the table.
The sky was clear.
A thin layer of mist remained above the horizon, but higher up the stars appeared sharp. Hundreds of small lights occupied the darkness. Some were barely visible to the naked eye, while others reached an unexpected brightness through the telescope.
The large telescope at the centre of the dome slowly turned.
The movement of its gears sent a faint vibration through the floor. The brass fittings had dulled in the cold. The metal surrounding the eyepiece felt almost like ice beneath the fingers.
The telescope turned towards the south-east.
Several stars passed through the lens first.
Then the darkness emptied again.
And Saturn entered the centre of the view.
At first, the planet appeared small. Its pale yellow surface shone quietly against the surrounding darkness. But as the focus sharpened, the rings began to emerge.
Thin.
Wide.
Layer upon layer.
Dark lines could be seen between the pale bands stretching around the planet. The distant edge of the rings passed in front of the stars, while the planet's shadow covered a small section of them in darkness.
A blank observation sheet rested on the table.
The date was written at the top.
The first line was drawn beneath it.
Saturn's position that night was recorded.
Then another point.
Another line.
And the observation began.
At the Edge of the Rings
As the hours passed, the sounds within the dome gradually faded.
Only the metallic clicks of the telescope during small adjustments remained, joined by the steady beat of the wall clock and the wind passing through the open dome.
Saturn stayed within the lens.
But the planet was not entirely still.
It moved across the sky almost imperceptibly, and the telescope had to be redirected at intervals. With every correction, the image drifted for a few seconds, the rings approaching the edge of the lens before returning to the centre.
The table beside the telescope slowly filled.
One sheet showed only the rings.
Another held the body of the planet and its shadow.
A third contained orbital lines, small circles and marked stars.
Fine black ink spread into the fibres of the paper.
The small points of light visible around Saturn were recorded as well. Some were distant stars. Others were the planet's moons.
Their positions shifted slightly with every observation.
A small point seen to the left of the planet on one night appeared on the right several nights later. Another moon disappeared close to the rings before becoming visible once again within the darkness.
These movements were transferred onto separate plates.
Saturn was drawn at the centre.
Fine ellipses were added around it.
The moons were marked as small black circles.
Some of the orbital lines appeared to cross one another, although each represented a different distance.
As the nights passed, new drawings joined the first.
The empty spaces on the papers grew smaller.
Small marks showing the positions of stars appeared in the upper-left corner. Long measurement lines rose along the right-hand side. Fine lines crossed certain points, with small numbers recording specific angles.
Saturn remained at the centre of every record.
The planet seen through the lens resembled the planet drawn on paper, but they were not the same.
Saturn in the sky belonged to light.
Saturn on the paper belonged to ink.
On one, shadows across the rings shifted through the night.
On the other, every movement had been fixed onto a single surface.
As morning approached, the eastern horizon began to pale.
Some of the stars were still visible, but the black of the sky was gradually turning deep blue.
Saturn remained within the lens.
Its rings were becoming more difficult to see.
The final measurement was recorded.
The telescope was stopped.
As the shutters of the dome slowly closed, the planet remained behind the narrowing opening.
But the orbits drawn across the table continued to hold the night.
Among the Orbits
Over the following weeks, the number of observation plates increased.
A single table was no longer enough.
Papers were placed inside wooden drawers, while dates and coordinates were written onto small cards. Some plates contained only Saturn. Others showed wide star fields. A few recorded the sky surrounding the planet on a much broader scale.
The surface of one plate was almost entirely black.
Fine white points were scattered across the dark field. Lines running through the centre divided the stars into regions, while a broad curve entered from the edge of the plate.
A distant galaxy had been recorded on another section.
When first seen through the telescope, it resembled little more than a faint blur.
As the focus was carefully adjusted, the light at its centre grew stronger. Paler layers became visible around it. Its spiral form could not be seen directly, but on the long-exposure observation plate, the arms of the galaxy slowly emerged from the darkness.
It lay far beyond Saturn.
The planet's rings could be clearly seen through the telescope, while the galaxy appeared as a hazy trace formed from countless distant points of light.
The two images were recorded on different nights.
Later, they were placed beside one another in the same archive.
On one side was the ringed planet travelling around the Sun.
On the other, a distant galaxy filled with stars.
Between them lay a darkness too vast to measure.
Across the table, only a few centimetres separated them.
The edges of the observation plates gradually began to wear.
The papers were opened and handled repeatedly. Corners curled. Ink faded across certain areas. A small tear appeared along the edge of one plate.
Thick thread was used to prevent it from spreading.
Each time the needle passed through the paper, a dry sound came from between the fibres.
One stitch.
Then another.
The thread continued along the edge of the plate.
Later, another worn section was reinforced in the same way.
Before long, some records in the archive were no longer made from paper alone.
Pieces of fabric were added.
Thin strips of leather strengthened the corners.
Metal eyelets attached small labels to the plates.
Every repair left a new mark across the surface of the archive.
The sky remained the same.
But the material carrying its record continued to change.
Fragments of the Night
When the first severe winter storm arrived, the observatory remained closed for several nights.
Wind struck the metal surface of the dome, while rain ran down the stone walls. At night, the entire building disappeared into darkness.
By the end of the third night, water had begun to enter through an old section of the roof.
Several drops fell onto the floor of the archive room.
Then more followed.
By morning, some of the boxes were wet.
The plates were removed immediately.
Part of the paper could be saved. The edges of several sheets had absorbed the water and become uneven. Ink had spread into faint shadows across others.
The file containing the Saturn observations had also been damaged.
The right-hand edge of the first plate had broken apart.
The lower section of a star chart had torn.
The dark surface containing the galaxy had separated in two places.
The corner of the close study of the rings had almost completely detached.
The plates were left to dry throughout the day.
That evening, they were arranged side by side across the table.
They could no longer be returned to their original condition.
So the surviving sections were separated.
The large drawing of Saturn was preserved.
The orbital diagram remained intact.
The centre of the galaxy record was kept.
The readable section of the star chart was saved.
The long fragment carrying the lines of the rings was placed aside.
One of the small observation cards had also remained inside the file.
Several short records could still be read across its surface.

The small drawing of Saturn beneath the text was still distinct.
The fragments were arranged again across a new surface.
The large Saturn plate was placed first.
The planet remained at the centre of the composition. Its rings stretched from one side to the other, passing through the torn sections as they continued across the surface.
The orbital drawings were positioned above.
Beside them came the galaxy record.
The star chart was placed below.
The close study of the rings went to the right.
Some fragments were stitched directly to one another.
Dark fabric was placed between others.
Linen thread passed through pale paper, while brown thread secured the leather edges. The knots were left visible.
The cut edges were not straightened.
Paper fibres remained exposed.
Loose threads hung from the fabrics.
Metal eyelets stayed in their original positions.
The resulting plate no longer resembled any of the first observations.
Yet every fragment still carried part of the same nights.
Saturn's orbit in one corner.
The distant galaxy elsewhere.
The positions of stars below.
The rings at the centre.
And in the lower-right corner, the small archive label.
Records once kept inside separate boxes now occupied a single surface.
The Final Observation Plate
The first clear night after the storm was bitterly cold.
When the dome opened again, the warmer air inside quickly escaped. A thin layer of moisture settled across the metal surfaces.
The telescope was turned towards Saturn once more.
The planet was there.
The same pale colour.
The same broad rings.
The same dark expanse around it.
Inside the archive room, plates lay torn, threads had loosened and papers were stained, yet the image in the sky appeared unchanged.
The focus was adjusted.
The outer edge of the rings sharpened.
Faint differences in tone became visible across the planet's surface.
One moon shone on the right.
Another appeared much farther from the planet, almost as small as a star.
No new sheet of paper was taken.
Instead, the large repaired plate was carried to the table.
A metal eyelet along its edge lightly struck the wood.
The pieces of fabric spread across the surface.
Small fibres caught between the stitches cast shadows beneath the light.
The observation began.
This time, only a few notes were added.
Saturn's position.
The locations of two moons.
The angle of the rings.
The hour.
Then the pen stopped.
The flame of the lamp inside the dome trembled slightly in the wind.
Lines, stitches and points of starlight across the plate appeared at different depths beneath the yellow light. Dark surfaces absorbed the glow, while the pale papers reflected it.
The drawing of Saturn at the centre faced the same direction as the planet inside the telescope.
Only a few metres away, the real rings could be seen through the lens.
Across the table rested the image recorded weeks earlier.
The night continued.
Saturn moved westward.
The telescope was adjusted several times.
By the time the final measurement was taken, the first hours of morning were already approaching.
A small date was added to the archive label.
A single mark was placed beneath it.
Then the ink was left to dry.
The plate was not closed away.
For a while, it remained beneath the open dome.
The wind moved along the worn edges of the paper. A loose thread shifted gently. One of the metal eyelets touched the table with a quiet sound.
Above, the stars continued to shine.
The galaxy could not be seen with the naked eye.
Saturn was still visible.
As it approached the horizon, its light softened within the atmosphere. The rings could no longer be seen without the telescope, but through the lens they remained.
Just before the dome closed, the planet was observed one final time.
Then the mechanism began to move.
The metal shutters approached one another from opposite sides of the sky.
The opening narrowed.
Some of the stars disappeared.
Saturn remained visible for a few seconds longer.
Then the edge of the dome passed in front of the planet.
The interior fell dark.
The telescope was silent.
Only the observation plate remained on the table.
Stars recorded across fabric.
Orbits drawn onto paper.
A distant galaxy against a black surface.
Threads passing through broken edges.
And at the centre, Saturn, its rings stretching across the entire plate.
The night itself had already ended.
But the observation remained...
