"The neon lights do not travel towards the dark centre in a straight line; each one bends at the final moment, accelerates, and traces a luminous arc around the vortex. The strongest colours appear where they are closest to disappearing..."

Neon Vortex: The Last Dance of Light

The Silence at the Centre

The darkness formed a perfect circle at the very centre of the star field.

There were no craters, shadows, or reflections of distant lights upon its surface. Although it appeared as distinct as a planet, it possessed no spherical depth. The white starlight arriving from the right did not touch it, and the blue glow rising beneath it left no trace upon its darkness.

Every light around the centre was visible.

The centre itself was not.

Only the space it occupied could be seen.

Close to the dark circle, an intense ring of yellow and white revolved. Its light was not constant. In one section, it strengthened until it approached white; as it travelled onwards, it turned orange and merged with the pink currents on the opposite side. The space beyond the ring was filled with wider, colder colours.

Electric-blue lines extended from the distant star field. Fine violet glimmers moved beside them, whilst pink currents approached the centre in broad curves. None followed the same path. One light bent downwards from above, another made a wide turn beneath the darkness, and a third divided into two slender branches near the ring.

From a distance, the movement appeared irregular.

Then the path of one blue current became apparent.

The light travelled towards the left side of the dark centre. Before reaching the ring, it changed direction, passed over the upper edge of the circle, and reappeared on the right. The faint line it left behind remained visible for several seconds. When its beginning and end were compared, it became clear that the light had not abandoned a straight path.

The space through which it travelled had curved.

The positions of the nearby stars confirmed it. Two white stars above the dark circle appeared to draw closer together before separating again. A dim star to the right appeared at two different points in brief intervals. Its light was not arriving at different times. The same glow was reaching the eye along two paths through the bending void.

There was no sound anywhere around it.

Although the neon currents seemed powerful enough to illuminate the entire cosmos, they moved in silence, passing through one another and circling the darkness at the centre. There was no explosion, no collision, no distant vibration.

At the heart of all that movement lay absolute silence.

The dark circle neither grew nor shifted.

Yet every path around it was curving inwards.

Bending Light

The first change appeared in the number of stars.

There seemed to be more of them to the left of the dark centre. At first, two new white points appeared. Then it became clear that they were not new stars. Images of the lights on the right had travelled around the darkness and become visible for a second time.

The same star appeared white on one side and pale blue on the other.

A pink current passed through the space between them.

The light began as a broad stream and narrowed as it approached the centre. Instead of following the straight path expected of it, it was drawn towards the darkness and began to glide along an arc. The far end retained its pink colour, whilst the section nearest the centre turned violet. When it reached the edge of the ring, the light divided once more.

One branch continued over the top.

The other disappeared behind the darkness.

Several seconds later, the same pink glow reappeared on the opposite side of the centre. Yet the direction from which it returned did not complete the direction from which it had vanished. Had the light passed behind the darkness, it should have emerged much lower. Instead, it arrived from above, crossed over a blue current, and approached the yellow ring.

Directions were beginning to lose their reliability.

The star field visible above was repeated among the slender lines of light below the darkness. The distance on the right continued on the left, whilst a glow moving away from the centre was approaching it at the same time. The paths of the lights appeared to cross, yet no meeting took place.

Each current travelled through a different depth.

But depth itself no longer remained fixed.

An electric-blue line in the distance suddenly appeared at the edge of the ring. Its brightness had not increased, nor had its width changed. There was nothing to make it appear closer.

The dark distance between them had simply vanished.

Then the line withdrew again.

This time, it did not return to the star field. It traced a second arc around the centre and merged with the violet lights. The stars along its path briefly lengthened. White points became slender lines, the lines curved, and when the blue light moved away, they returned to their former shapes.

All but one.

The white light above the dark circle continued to lengthen. At first, it was a short line. Then it became a fine arc following the curve of the ring. Its two ends gradually drew closer until a faint circle formed around the centre.

The light of a single star had surrounded the darkness completely.

The circle remained for several seconds.

Then it was drawn into the yellow ring.

The star was still shining in its original place.

Yet part of its light was now revolving around the dark centre.

The Narrowing Distance

The dark circle was not growing.

The stars around it were drawing closer together.

White points once separated by wide spaces began to gather along narrowing curves. The outer arms of the neon currents folded inwards with them. Distant blue lights retained their width, yet the distance between them diminished with every revolution.

The centre remained the same size.

The rest of the universe was contracting.

The pink current passing above the darkness completed its first orbit. On the second, it traced a smaller arc. On the third, it reached the edge of the yellow ring. Although each revolution appeared shorter than the last, the light took longer to complete it.

The opposite occurred within the blue current.

Its first turn was slow and wide. The second was completed within seconds. The third seemed to end at the instant it began. The blue line appeared first to the right of the darkness, then to the left, and then above it once more.

It was no longer possible to tell which image had arrived first.

Small clusters of stars began to drift between the violet lights. White points that had once remained still lengthened into lines, following the direction of the neon currents. When one cluster passed beneath the centre, its entire image bent. Its leading edge reached the yellow ring whilst its trailing edge remained deep within the distant darkness.

A single cluster of stars extended across two separate distances.

The surrounding void deepened.

The darkness was not spreading from the centre. As the spaces between the stars diminished, the empty regions behind them overlapped, gathering layers of midnight blue and black within one another. Against this darkness, the neon colours became brighter.

The electric blue sharpened.

The pink light grew warmer.

The violet lines deepened, forming slender veins around the centre.

With every revolution, the yellow ring drew closer to white.

No fixed point remained from which distance could be measured. The same star could be seen both at the edge of the darkness and far beyond it. A current of light did not shrink as it approached the centre, nor did it fade as it moved away. Nearness could no longer be understood through size, brightness, or motion.

It could only be felt in the tightening revolutions.

The neon currents were not falling into the centre.

They were tracing ever narrower circles around it.

Each revolution carried them closer to the edge of the darkness, yet the final distance would not close. A fine, unreachable space remained just beyond the yellow-white ring. Blue, pink, and violet lights accelerated around it, lengthening and returning over their own paths.

The dark centre did not need to move.

Every direction in space had already closed around it.

The Last Dance of Light

The electric-blue current accelerated first.

It passed beneath the darkness. Rose along the right. Curved through the pink light and reappeared above the yellow ring. Before the trail behind it could fade, it began a second revolution.

The pink current followed.

The violet lines divided in two.

Orange glimmers gathered around the centre like slender sparks.

The vortex drew every colour into the same rotation.

The blue light formed a long arc along the edge of the darkness. The pink current passed around it, wrapping itself about the outer curve. Violet lines filled the spaces between them as white light rose from the yellow ring and fell across every colour.

The stars were no longer fixed points.

Each had become a fine trail curving around the centre. The distant star field resembled countless rings of light unfolding around the dark circle. It was impossible to see where one star began or upon which revolution its light came to an end.

The movement accelerated.

Then, without warning, it slowed.

The blue current reached the upper edge of the darkness and appeared suspended midway through a single revolution. It had not stopped. Light continued to travel within it, its layers of colour shifted, and its curved surface trembled. Yet its position beside the dark centre did not change.

The pink light reached the same region.

Its movement did not slow.

It lengthened.

The leading edge approached the yellow-white ring whilst the trailing end remained within the distant star field. As the distance between them widened, the pink colour thinned, turned violet, and became a dark red line near the heat of the centre.

A single moment of light was spreading across the entire orbit.

The outer section of the blue current was still completing its first revolution. The region closest to the centre appeared to have completed countless turns. The light’s past, its present movement, and the points it had not yet reached had become visible beside one another.

The yellow ring intensified.

White light revolved around the darkness, passed through the orange layers, and briefly illuminated the entire vortex. The boundaries between blue and pink disappeared. Violet lines vanished within the white glow. What remained was a single, unbroken current of colour circling the centre.

This was the brightest moment of the vortex.

It was also the final place in which the lights remained visible.

The leading edge of the electric-blue current touched the inner rim of the yellow ring. Its colour first approached white, then returned to a deep blue. The light did not fall into the dark centre. It travelled along the boundary, tracing an almost perfect circle.

It completed one revolution.

Then another.

The beginning of the third could no longer be distinguished.

The blue circle merged into the ring surrounding the darkness.

Then the pink current arrived.

Its final revolution was wider. It turned orange as it passed beneath the darkness and violet when it reached the upper edge. Each colour reached its greatest intensity for a brief moment before disappearing within the yellow-white ring.

The light did not fade before it vanished.

It grew brighter.

The last violet line in the vortex curved inwards. Its distant end remained among the stars whilst the other began revolving around the darkness. The line lengthened, narrowed, and contracted into a single luminous point.

The point flared one final time.

The darkness did not reflect it.

What Remained Around the Darkness

The outer arms of the neon currents faded one by one.

First, the distant blue lines withdrew from the star field. Then the broad curves of pink light darkened. The violet veins remained visible for several more seconds before dissolving into faint shadows around the yellow ring.

The movement diminished.

The stars began to resemble small points once more.

But they did not return to their former positions.

The white star that should have been to the right of the dark centre was shining on the left. The cluster above remained divided into two separate images. A pale blue light that should have been far away now appeared beside the yellow ring, resting within an unreachable depth.

Space no longer remembered its former shape.

The luminous ring slowly thinned. Its white regions turned yellow, and its yellow layers became orange. Each colour travelled around the ring one final time before disappearing beneath the darkness.

Only the perfect circle at the centre remained.

There was no sound around it.

No movement.

The paths once followed by the neon currents were empty.

Yet a fine section beneath the darkness appeared different from the rest. At first, it might have been mistaken for a fading trace left by the yellow ring. But the light did not weaken. It moved slowly along the edge of the circle.

Its colour was electric blue.

As the slender line travelled around the darkness, it briefly turned pink. Then violet. Every colour of the neon vortex appeared in succession within the same narrow glow.

The line did not complete a circle.

It ended upon reaching the upper edge of the darkness.

For several seconds, nothing changed.

Then the same blue glow reappeared on the opposite side. It was not following its previous path or completing its former movement. It continued from another point, as though it had passed through the darkness itself.

The centre still reflected no light.

Yet the final glow surrounding it no longer came from the stars beyond.

The neon vortex had vanished.

The last dance of light continued along the edge of the darkness...
