The Dark Lenses

The final light in the observatory went out shortly after midnight.

The indicators positioned around the walls darkened. The steady hum of the ventilation system fell silent. The mechanism turning the large telescope towards the window stopped before completing its movement.

Only the faint starlight entering through the window remained.

The night was clear. Several white stars were visible in the distance, whilst the broad darkness between them stretched on unchanged. A thin layer of cloud near the horizon covered the region beneath the stars in a pale grey.

The star charts on the desk could no longer be seen in the darkness. Metal measuring instruments, inactive screens, and notebooks with worn edges had become shadows merging into one another.

The glasses lay upon an open chart.

Their thick frame was dark blue, almost black. Small scratches marked the ends of the arms, and a faded silver trace rested beneath the bridge. At first glance, the lenses appeared black. They did not reflect the starlight from the window or carry the images of anything within the room.

A blue glow appeared along the lower edge of the left lens.

At first, the light remained as a fine line clinging to the frame. Then it spread across the glass. An electric-blue current opened within a midnight-blue darkness and curved upwards.

There was no light of the same colour beyond the window.

Three white stars ignited near the blue current. One rested at the centre of the lens, whilst the other two stood close to the left edge of the frame. Their light was distant and cold. Rings too fine to be clearly seen trembled around each one.

The right lens remained dark.

Several seconds later, pink light began to gather at its centre. The faint glow expanded, surrounded itself with violet layers, and became a soft cloud in the upper part of the lens. A yellow star ignited within it. Then an orange light passed through the pink and travelled towards the outer edge of the glass.

Two different cosmic scenes existed within the two lenses.

On the left lay cold colours and a deep field of stars. On the right, dense clouds moved through warm light.

The glasses remained motionless upon the desk whilst the stars within their lenses slowly changed position.

The electricity was gone.

The telescope was inactive.

The night beyond the window had not changed.

Yet the two dark lenses on the desk continued to gaze upon somewhere far beyond the room.

The Cold Light in the Left Lens

When the glasses were raised towards the window, the image within the left lens did not grow.

The three stars visible outside remained in the same positions behind the glass. Yet through the left lens, countless smaller lights appeared around them, filling the darkness that had seemed empty to the unaided eye.

White points were scattered across the midnight-blue void.

Layers of blue gas extended between them, whilst violet currents traced broad arcs around the stars. A bright turquoise cloud in the lower-left corner followed the curve of the lens as it rose, thinning beneath the dark region at the centre.

The image was not still.

Blue layers passed through one another, opening darker spaces behind them. Small stars ignited within those spaces before disappearing behind the currents of gas. None moved quickly. The change unfolded like a slow stream crossing an immeasurable distance.

The left lens was not magnifying the night beyond the window.

It was separating the light that existed there but could not normally be seen.

A faint cluster of stars rested near the right edge of the lens. What appeared to the unaided eye as a single white point became dozens of stars spread across different distances. The nearest were blue. Those behind them approached white, whilst the deepest could barely be seen within a violet haze.

The glasses slowly turned towards the wall.

The window disappeared from view. The dark stone surface should have been visible behind the left lens.

The blue star field did not vanish.

The turquoise cloud continued moving in the same direction. The white cluster approached the edge of the frame. Violet currents extended through the darkness where the wall should have been.

The image remained when the glasses were turned downwards.

The same cosmic depth appeared when the lenses faced the desk, the inactive screens, and the star charts upon the floor. The image did not exist beyond the room. It was not reflected upon the surface of the glass.

The left lens was not looking in a particular direction.

It was connected to a particular distance.

A new light ignited within the blue cloud.

At first, it was a small point. Then white lines extended from it in four directions. The surrounding violet layers brightened, revealing that the wide region which had appeared dark was filled with stars.

The light did not reach the night beyond the window.

Nor was it reflected upon the wall.

It shone only within the left lens.

Several seconds later, however, a fine blue glow appeared along the edge of a metal measuring ring upon the desk.

The light within the left lens had left its first trace inside the room.

The Warm Cloud in the Right Lens

The pink light within the right lens was no longer where it had first appeared.

The cloud had spread from the upper part of the glass towards the centre. Pale violet layers surrounded its edges, whilst yellow and orange lights passed through it. Several regions were translucent, revealing a dark blue star field behind them.

Unlike the silent depth within the left lens, the right lens held constant movement.

The edges of the pink clouds expanded, and their colours changed whenever yellow light passed through them. One layer became a vivid pink whilst another disappeared into violet. Orange glimmers travelled from right to left, carried by invisible currents.

When the right lens turned towards the window, the stars outside remained unchanged.

Yet one of the three stars that appeared blue through the left lens carried a warm yellow light in the right. The space surrounding it was filled with pink gas. The second star lay behind a violet layer, visible only as an intermittent glow.

The third star was absent from the right lens.

In its place was an intense light formed from orange and white. It expanded, pressing the surrounding pink cloud outwards. No single star could be distinguished at its centre.

The left lens revealed a cluster of stars, whilst the right opened the region surrounding it in warm light.

One separated the distances.

The other made the energy within those distances visible...

When the right lens turned towards the wall, the pink clouds did not disappear. The image did not remain fixed whilst the frame moved; it rotated with the glass. The yellow star descended from the upper-right corner, and the orange current changed direction as it followed the curve of the lens.

Then the pink glow passed beyond the frame.

A thin stain of colour first appeared beside the right edge of the glasses. It expanded in the same rhythm as the cloud moving within the lens. One section fell across the star chart upon the desk, whilst the other remained suspended in the air as a translucent layer.

The lines upon the paper became visible beneath the pink light.

The positions of the marked stars did not correspond with those inside the lens. None of the routes drawn in black ink matched the region revealed by the glasses.

The image within the right lens did not belong to any recorded star chart.

Or perhaps it had not yet been visible when those charts were made.

A white glow rose within the pink light. It did not stop when it reached the surface of the lens. It crossed over the frame and opened into a four-pointed star in the darkness behind the glasses.

There was no new source of light within the room.

Yet yellow, pink, and blue reflections had begun moving across the desk.

The glasses were not merely displaying a distant cosmic region.

The light arriving from that region was forgetting which side of the lenses it was meant to remain on.

When the Two Images Aligned

Both lenses were turned towards the window at the same time.

For the first few seconds, the blue depth on the left and the warm cloud on the right remained separate. The dark bridge between the lenses formed a sharp boundary between the two images.

Then one of the white stars in the left lens found its counterpart in the right.

The blue light became surrounded by a yellow centre within the pink cloud. The star that appeared distant and small on the left stood at the centre of a wide glow on the right. When the two images aligned, the darkness surrounding the star gained depth.

Then the second star joined it.

The violet current in the left lens passed beneath the pink cloud in the right. The turquoise layer of gas narrowed at the edge of the warm light and formed a curve that had not been visible before. It continued across both lenses, becoming a broad nebular line that covered the glasses from one side to the other.

The lenses were not showing separate views.

They carried divided layers of light from the same cosmic region.

As the alignment continued, more stars appeared.

White points hidden within the dark regions of the left lens became visible beneath the warm glow from the right. Gaps concealed behind the dense pink clouds on the right opened into the blue depth of the left. Each colour completed what remained unseen within the other lens.

The nebula was no longer formed from two flat images.

Several stars appeared close to the surfaces of the lenses, whilst others shone within unreachable depths. Pink and violet clouds separated into layers divided by immense distances. Turquoise currents moved between them, curving around yellow stars.

The boundary of the frame gradually became indistinct.

The blue cloud in the left lens spilled beyond the lower rim. The pink glow in the right passed over the bridge. The two colours met behind the glasses and formed a broad cosmic region before the window.

The walls of the room remained in place.

The desk, the charts, and the inactive instruments were still visible.

Yet the spaces between them had filled with stars.

Small white lights travelled over the desk before disappearing into the depth of the room. Violet clouds moved slowly around the telescope, covering its metal surface in a cold glow. Pink currents expanded before the window, joining the darkness inside with the night beyond.

The stars visible outside did not merge with this cosmic region.

They remained in their original positions.

The glasses were not revealing another version of the same night. The nebula within the lenses did not lie beyond the window. There was no physical connection between the direction in which the glasses faced and the region they displayed.

Still, the image continued to spread through the room.

When the final blue layer in the left lens reached the orange light in the right, every star flared at once.

For a moment, the observatory ceased to resemble an observatory.

A violet star field appeared where the ceiling had been, whilst pink and blue clouds stretched beyond the walls. The floor vanished into darkness, and the small lights surrounding the desk became distant clusters of stars.

The glasses remained in the same place.

Their dark frame was the only distinct boundary left within the expanding cosmic view.

Then a new star appeared within the lenses.

It was not part of the nebula.

It was shining from the side where the room existed.

The Galaxy Beyond the Lenses

When the glasses were placed upon the desk, the cosmic image was expected to disappear.

The blue currents within the left lens slowed. The pink clouds in the right began to fade. Several stars visible inside the room went out, and the dark surfaces of the walls returned.

Not every light withdrew.

A small violet star remained above the telescope. A blue glow moved along the edge of the desk, whilst yellow points flickered upon the star chart.

The night beyond the window had not changed.

The same stars remained in the same positions.

This time, the glasses had been placed facing the dark wall rather than the window. Although stone lay behind the lenses, the nebula continued to move within them.

Blue clouds expanded through the left lens.

Layers of pink light passed through one another on the right.

A small white star ignited upon the dark bridge between them.

A corresponding light appeared upon the wall.

At first, it was a faint point. Then four fine arms opened around it, surrounded by a violet glow. The star’s light did not fall across the surface of the wall. It appeared to shine from within the depth where the wall stood.

A second star appeared slightly higher.

Then a third.

Each new light first ignited within the lenses and found its counterpart wherever the glasses were facing several seconds later. A pink cloud opened along the lower wall. A blue current passed through it and rose towards the ceiling.

The glasses did not move.

The cosmic region continued travelling beyond them.

A blank section of the star chart upon the desk became illuminated by blue light. Small white points appeared where no markings had existed before. They multiplied at regular intervals and formed the same cluster visible within the left lens.

The chart had begun recording the region displayed by the glasses.

Yet dark shapes corresponding to objects in the room appeared among the new stars. The long shadow of the telescope formed a black line across the cosmic map. The rectangular shape of the desk became an empty region within the star field.

The galaxy within the lenses was no longer displaying only a distant region.

It was adding the observatory to its own image.

A new yellow light gathered at the edge of the right lens. It passed through the pink clouds and turned white upon reaching the centre. At the same moment, every star within the room went out.

The darkness returned.

For several seconds, only the two lenses remained visible.

A cold blue depth opened on the left.

A pink nebula moved on the right.

Then the image of the observatory appeared within the glass.

The desk, the telescope, and the dark window rested among distant stars in miniature. Violet clouds extended around the room, whilst countless white lights burned along its outer boundary.

The glasses were facing the wall.

Yet the lenses were looking back into the room.

When the final blue glow upon the desk faded, a single star remained upon the wall. Its light slowly strengthened until it reached the dark frame of the glasses.

The galaxy was no longer visible only beyond the lenses.

It was watching its surroundings from the other side of the glass...
