At the Centre of the Splash
The ink must have fallen only moments ago.
The large drop at the centre was still wet and glossy. Black lines extending outwards revealed the directions of the impact, while smaller drops of different sizes rested between them. Slender streams had darkened below, gathering round beads of ink at their tips.
The surface itself could not be seen.
Its presence was revealed by the shape of the black splash. The marks spreading from the centre had opened after striking a single point, yet instead of dispersing and flattening, the main drop had preserved its curved form.
The air carried the sharp, cool scent of ink.
The smaller drops were quickly losing their shine, and their edges had begun to turn matt. The main drop, however, showed no sign of change. Its black boundary trembled like a heavy liquid, while a blue glimmer on its left side moved slowly across the surface.
At first, the blue appeared to be the reflection of a nearby light.
Yet there was no source of blue light around the drop.
The glimmer followed its curve downwards. Then it took on a rounded form. One side remained in darkness, while the other was illuminated by faint starlight. Fine lines resembling white clouds appeared across its surface.
It was not a reflection.
It was a blue planet resting beneath the black surface.
The planet moved slowly. As it approached the outer edge of the drop, it neither diminished nor disappeared into the darkness. It turned behind the curved boundary and entered an orbit farther within.
A small orange sphere appeared behind it.
Then a white star began to shine.
The centre of the main drop opened onto a darkness deeper than any liquid could reflect. Countless points shone within it, while pale layers of colour moved around one another.
The scent of the ink remained unchanged.
Yet the light emerging from the drop was growing warmer.
The Glossy Black Boundary
The outer edge of the drop was not a perfect line.
Fine projections reached out around it, with tiny beads of ink suspended from their pointed tips. With every vibration, one of these tips stretched a little farther before returning to its original shape. Surface tension held the black liquid together as the cosmic movement within pressed its boundaries outwards.
The blue planet appeared again.
This time, it was much farther away. Small stars shone around it, while the dark expanse behind deepened beyond the drop’s width of only a few centimetres.
A fine ripple formed across the black boundary.
It travelled from the outer edge towards the centre. Wherever it passed, the glossy surface became transparent. First, several stars appeared. Then clouds of rose and blue emerged from within.
A warm orange light opened at the centre of the drop.
White and grey rings turned around it, while the outer layers merged with dark blue currents. As the luminous core expanded, the reflection upon the black surface disappeared. The drop’s curved boundary became a slender frame standing within the darkness.
As it was approached, the surface of the ink did not grow larger.
The distance behind it expanded.
The smaller splashes outside withdrew towards the edges of vision. The black line of the main drop extended upwards and downwards, surrounding a vast opening. The scent of ink weakened. In its place came a dry smell resembling warm stone and electrically charged air.
A low vibration rose from the darkness.
The sound did not come from the surface of the drop. With every turn of the galaxy’s luminous centre, it travelled through the entire cosmic expanse. Starlight bent slightly with the vibration, while the shadows of planets shifted along their orbits.
The black boundary rippled once more.
Then it withdrew from view.
The Galaxy Within the Ink
The galaxy was no longer a small image inside the drop.
Its luminous core illuminated most of the surrounding expanse, while its orange and white rings made wide turns through the darkness. Blue currents along its outer layers passed between rose-coloured cosmic clouds and reached distant clusters of stars.
The light was warm near the centre of the galaxy.
Orange radiance fell across the surfaces of planets, forming fine rings along the edges of their dark hemispheres. Farther away, the light grew colder, and the stars began to appear in shades of blue and white.
The great blue planet continued along its orbit to the right.
The cloud layers across its surface were close enough to distinguish. Beneath the starlight, its dark oceans appeared almost black. A small orange sphere moved behind it, while a narrow region of white stars extended between them.
Fine lines of rose turned around the galaxy.
They followed no fixed orbit. Whenever they passed near a planet, they curved before returning to the galaxy’s outer rings. Their movements resembled the long, twisting traces of ink outside.
Upon entering the cosmic clouds, their colours lost their softness.
Dark veins opened within layers of blue, while small clusters of stars appeared between the rose-coloured lights. Each layer carried a different temperature. One passed like a dry, warm current, while another covered the surrounding expanse in a cold blue.
The drop’s black boundary could be seen far behind as a slender ring.
The area outside had diminished within it, leaving the black splashes as distant shadows. The main drop’s form, only a few centimetres wide, now resembled a narrow frame opening onto the outside.
The galaxy within extended into a depth with no visible end.
The luminous centre completed another turn.
This time, a small star separated from one of the outer rings. Instead of following a straight line through the darkness, it curved towards the boundary of the drop. Leaving a fine golden trail behind, it approached the black ring.
The star did not disappear when it touched the boundary.
Its light passed into the black surface.
At the same moment, one of the small ink drops outside shone gold.
A blue light separated from another region of the galaxy. It too travelled towards the boundary. When it reached the black ring, the curved surface of a blue planet appeared within a second droplet outside.
The cosmic movement within was spreading through the surrounding ink.
The galaxy was not emerging.
Yet it was leaving traces of its distances within every drop.
Scattered Cosmic Traces
When the view passed back through the black boundary, the main drop became small again.
The galaxy continued to turn at its centre, its brilliant orange core illuminating the ink’s dark surface from within. The surrounding droplets no longer appeared to be flat black points.
A blue planet rested within the large droplet above.
Its curved surface followed the shape of the liquid, while starlight formed a white line along one edge. As the planet turned, the blue glimmer across the ink moved with it.
An orange star shone at the end of a slender splash to the right.
When its light reached the boundaries of the small drop, it turned back and formed a warm ring within the black liquid. A smaller point nearby held a starless darkness. No matter how closely it was observed, the bottom of the drop could not be seen.
The galaxy’s blue outer rings appeared within one of the streams below.
They curved through the thin black line and continued without being compressed where it narrowed. Upon reaching the round droplet at the end of the splash, the blue current expanded and became a small cluster of stars.
None of them was missing from the main drop.
The blue planet was still travelling in orbit around the galaxy. The orange star continued to shine far from the centre, and the blue outer rings maintained their wide rotation.
The small drops were not carrying these celestial bodies.
They were opening views of them from different distances.
A new vibration began across the surface of the main drop.
As the galaxy turned, the black edges expanded slightly, while the fine lines of the surrounding splash moved in the same rhythm. Each line resembled the continuation of an inner orbit beyond the drop. As the planets travelled around the galaxy, the small ink drops shifted position as though tracing invisible circles around the centre.
The splash had appeared to be scattered at random.
Yet every black point corresponded to another place within the cosmic order.
The Centre That Never Dries
The fine lines of ink began to lose their shine.
The outermost points turned matt first. Then the edges of the long streams below became still. The sharp scent of the black liquid faded, and the coolness in the surrounding air dispersed.
The cosmic images within the smaller drops also grew dim.
The orange star’s light contracted. The blue planet turned its dark side forwards. A cluster of stars within a slender droplet diminished into distant white points.
Yet they did not disappear completely.
They continued to shine far beneath the darkening black surfaces.
The main drop remained unchanged.
Its curved boundary still carried a wet gleam, while blue light continued to move along its left side. The galaxy within preserved the same breadth it had held when first seen, and its warm core illuminated the surrounding rings.
The dark marks reaching the edge of the drop had become fixed.
Its centre showed no sign of drying.
A white star separated from the galaxy’s outer rings. It stopped near the black boundary and sent its light towards the surface. The radiance did not pass outside. It remained beneath the curved edge and formed a fine line around the entire drop.
For a moment, the main drop opened like an eye.
The galaxy turned within the darkness. Planets moved at different distances, while nebula-like clouds spread their colours among the stars. The black ink remained as a thin, shining boundary surrounding this vastness.
When the final splash outside turned matt, the movement stopped.
The galaxy did not.
A new star began to shine within the darkness. Its light appeared first at the centre of the main drop, then found its counterpart in the smallest point of ink nearby.
The surface had held the mark of the ink.
The depth of the galaxy had still touched nowhere...
