Forest Galaxy

The Forest Where the Horizon Disappeared

The first thing to disappear upon entering the forest was not a sense of direction. It was the horizon.

The trees rose so high that the sky could be seen only through narrow openings between the branches. Trunks faded into the darkness behind one another, while the pointed crowns of the pines divided the night into small fragments. From beyond the forest, there was nothing unusual about it. All that could be seen from a distance was a dark, silent and seemingly endless sea of trees.

Yet the deeper the path continued, the more the sky began to behave differently.

At first, the stars appeared between the branches. There was nothing unexpected about that. Farther in, however, some of them no longer seemed to shine behind the trees, but in front of them. Their light hovered within the dark spaces between the trunks, sometimes descending so close to the ground that it appeared almost within reach before fading without a trace.

It became increasingly difficult to tell where the sky ended.

A pale blue mist covered the forest floor. Although there was no wind, it moved slowly between the trunks. More unusual still were the small points of light suspended above it. At first they might have been mistaken for stars reflected from damp branches.

A few steps farther on made that explanation impossible.

The lights did not move.

Small points with the same brilliance as the stars above remained silently among the trees. Some hovered only a few metres from the ground. Others appeared halfway up the tallest pines. There was no obvious pattern to their positions, yet the farther one looked into the forest, the more numerous they became.

It was as though the night itself were slowly descending towards the earth.

Far ahead, a dark blue band appeared between the trees. It could easily have been mistaken for a shadow within the mist. But the band curved upwards, passing between the branches until it reached the sky.

Hundreds of tiny stars burned within it.

It was not a path.

It was not a river.

Yet it passed through the forest.

And when the gaze followed it upwards, the same dark band could be seen continuing across the sky on a scale far beyond the trees below.

The Night the Stars Descended Among the Pines

As the night deepened, the forest did not become quiet.

It had already been silent.

What changed was the silence itself.

The sound of the wind disappeared. The branches no longer moved. Even the faint noises usually heard beneath the fallen leaves and pine needles were gone. The forest was not suppressing the sounds around it.

It seemed to have stopped producing them altogether.

Above the trees, meanwhile, the number of stars continued to grow.

The dark blue band stretching across the treetops was now unmistakable. It curved above the forest like a vast arm before descending towards the trees in the distance. Turquoise, deep blue and pale white light flowed into one another, gathering into clusters of stars in certain places.

But the stars were not the only forms visible in the night.

Several small spheres appeared within the darkness. One glowed with a muted yellow light. Others carried shades of blue and near-black, almost disappearing against the colours surrounding them.

There was no way to judge their scale.

They might have been distant worlds suspended far beyond the forest, or small objects floating somewhere among the trees.

Distance itself was beginning to lose meaning.

There was no longer any reliable way to tell whether a star was millions of miles away or resting between two pines.

Then the first great change began.

The band of stars above the forest started to move.

The motion was so slow that it was difficult to notice at first. The treetops provided the only fixed reference. Against them, the dark blue bands of light could be seen turning across the sky.

The outer arms curved gradually.

Then a second arm became visible.

Then a third.

Each was turning around the same centre.

A galaxy was not forming above the forest. It seemed to have been there all along.

The night was simply withdrawing the darkness that had hidden it.

A faint orange light emerged from its centre.

And for the first time, the entire forest became illuminated.

The trees did not turn green or brown beneath the light. Instead, they took on shades of blue and turquoise. Mist carried the glow between the trunks, while stars appeared in places where none had been visible before.

Some shone between the branches.

Some hovered in front of the trunks.

Others appeared much deeper within the forest, as though they had grown there alongside the trees.

At that moment, the boundary between forest and sky disappeared completely.

The Spiral Turning Above the Trees

The centre of the galaxy was not directly above the treetops.

No matter how far one travelled, it always remained slightly farther away.

At times it appeared above the pines to the right. Several hundred metres later, looking upwards again placed it closer to the centre of the forest. Yet the motion of the stars suggested that this was not the ordinary movement of the night sky.

There was an unseen relationship between the forest and the galaxy.

It was as though the forest were changing direction.

Or perhaps the sky was.

There was no way to tell which one was moving.

The orange and white light at the centre of the spiral continued to strengthen. Its turquoise arms widened into the surrounding darkness until the outer bands covered almost the entire sky.

There was no longer any scale by which the galaxy could be measured.

Some of the stars belonging to its outermost reaches were still visible between the trees.

After a while, another detail became impossible to ignore.

The tallest pines were not leaning towards the centre of the galaxy.

Yet their crowns seemed to point directly towards it.

Hundreds of trees, despite their different heights and positions, appeared to indicate the same unseen point. Smaller pines rose from the darkness below, while the tallest reached towards the outer arms of the galaxy. Some branches passed in front of the stars.

Others seemed to disappear behind them.

It was no longer easy to see where a tree ended.

Following a dark trunk upwards, its branches gradually merged with the night until the same line seemed to continue somewhere within a distant arm of the galaxy.

Perhaps it was only an effect of looking into darkness for too long.

But the same illusion appeared among every group of trees.

As the galaxy turned, some of the stars above changed position. The stars within the forest did not.

They remained fixed.

It was as though the enormous spiral in the sky continued to rotate while the fragments that had reached the forest had taken root and could no longer move.

And with that came another possibility.

Perhaps the stars were not descending into the forest.

Perhaps the forest had been standing among the stars for far longer than anyone could know.

The Roots of the Sky

At the darkest point of the night, the centre of the galaxy reached its greatest brightness.

The orange light no longer appeared to come from the sky alone. Small glimmers of the same warm colour had begun to appear between the trees.

They were different from the cold blue stars around them.

Their light was softer, quieter and somehow deeper.

Each resembled the glow at the centre of the galaxy.

No visible connection joined them. Yet whenever the centre brightened, the orange lights within the forest grew stronger. When the centre faded, they faded with it.

The forest seemed to breathe in the same rhythm as the spiral above.

One arm of the galaxy swept across the sky in a vast curve before bending down towards the trees. Deep blue gradually gave way to turquoise as the luminous band entered the pines.

There was no single line where the sky ended and the forest began.

The stars simply became fewer, mixed with the branches, then appeared again farther down within the darkness.

The arms of the galaxy did not seem to end in the sky at all.

They extended into the forest.

And if its arms reached downwards, then another question followed.

Was its centre truly above?

Perhaps the spiral overhead was not a distant celestial body.

Perhaps it was only the visible part of a far greater structure.

Beneath the earth, the roots of the trees connected with one another beyond sight. Could the stars be connected in much the same way somewhere beyond the visible sky?

Or had the forest and the galaxy never been two separate places at all?

As soon as the thought emerged, the wind returned.

One of the highest branches moved first.

Then the tree beside it.

Then the entire forest.

As the branches swayed, stars vanished and reappeared between them. But now the stars above were trembling in the same rhythm, as though the distant galaxy itself were responding to the movement of the trees below.

Then the light at its centre suddenly intensified.

For a single moment, there were no shadows.

Every trunk, every branch and every star could be seen at once.

And in that brief moment, it became clear that the trees were not simply standing beneath the galaxy.

Some of them seemed to reach into it.

The Light Left Behind

As dawn approached, the transformation ended as quietly as it had begun.

The outer arms of the galaxy were the first to fade. Deep blue and turquoise bands slowly dissolved into the ordinary darkness of the night. The small worlds disappeared one by one. The orange centre diminished until it became no more distinguishable than any other distant point of light.

The stars between the trees remained a little longer.

Even as the eastern sky began to brighten, several continued to shine among the dark trunks.

Then they too disappeared, one after another.

All except one.

Deep within the forest, between two tall pines, a single star remained.

The sun had not yet risen, but the sky had already turned pale blue. The star should no longer have been visible.

More importantly, it was not in the sky.

It remained within the dark space between the trees, only a few metres above the ground.

It did not move.

Walking towards it did not change the distance.

Ten steps brought it no closer.

Twenty more left it exactly where it had been.

Trees fell behind and others replaced them, yet the star remained suspended between two trunks at precisely the same distance.

At last, the first sunlight reached the forest floor.

The star went dark.

Only the pines remained.

In daylight, the forest appeared entirely ordinary. There was no mist between the trunks. No spiral structure turned above the treetops. The sky was clear, calm and empty.

It seemed as though the night had left no evidence behind.

Yet while leaving the forest, one final glance revealed a small detail.

The crowns of the most distant trees were all facing the same direction.

Every one of them pointed towards an empty place in the sky.

The exact place where the centre of the galaxy had been.

Perhaps the sky only drew close to the forest on certain nights.

Perhaps the galaxy left its stars between the trees before withdrawing once more.

But there was another possibility.

Perhaps the galaxy never left at all.

Daylight merely made it invisible.

And deep within the forest, the stars were waiting quietly for the light to disappear again...

Continue the Journey

Forest Galaxy begins where the boundary between earth and sky disappears. The galaxy appears to turn above the pines, yet its stars reach deep between the trees, leaving only one question behind: is the forest rising towards the stars, or have the stars already entered the forest?
