Cosmic Tide
The Shoreless Sea
There was no shore to mark where the ocean began.
Dark blue waters stretched through the darkness of space in broad layers. Beneath them lay no sand, rock, or measurable seabed. Above them was no sky holding the sea beneath its body.
Yet there were waves.
The midnight-blue surface slowly rose, formed pale blue curves, and travelled along an invisible slope. White foam gathered at the edges of the waves, whilst small droplets broke away and scattered into the void.
The droplets did not fall.
They remained suspended around the water, turned as small blue spheres, and separated into glimmers resembling starlight several seconds later. A faint trail remained behind each droplet, forming slender arcs above the ocean.
Stars were burning within the water.
Some appeared as white points close to the surface, whilst others carried golden light through the dark depths. When the waves rose, the stars rose with them. When the water curved, their light followed the shape of the current.
None of them went out.
Yellow lights passing through the white foam briefly turned orange before returning to their former brilliance. Blue stars appeared sharper within the colder layers of water. Their light revealed currents extending beneath the surface.
Four planets surrounded the ocean.
A large blue planet rested near the highest curve of the upper wave. Half its surface received light, whilst the other half remained in darkness. Lower down, a small planet marked with grey and blue stood within the hollow of the great wave.
An orange-striped planet in the lower region appeared far from the deepest layer of water. A small blue sphere travelled within the current, among the stars.
The planets appeared motionless.
At first, the ocean seemed calm as well.
Then one of the white stars near the surface slowly changed position. Its light followed the direction of the wave, rose upwards, and curved towards the blue planet.
A second star moved.
Then a third.
The current beginning in the depths of the ocean had not yet reached the surface.
The Pull Beginning in the Depths
The first movement appeared within the darkest layer of water.
A slender blue line opened inside the midnight depths. Neither its beginning nor its end could be seen. It passed through the lower ocean, curved around the stars, and rose towards the centre of the great wave.
As the line advanced, the surrounding water divided.
Small stars burning in the depths joined the current. Their lights did not drift without order. They travelled whilst maintaining equal distances from one another. The white points formed a curved line and began revolving around the blue current.
The waves at the surface changed direction.
The water near the large blue planet rose, whilst the lower currents bent towards the orange world. Around the smaller planet in the centre, the water divided in two. One current joined the great wave. The other closed around itself, forming a smaller vortex.
The gravitational pull of the planets appeared to be carrying the water in different directions.
The blue planet was raising the upper wave.
The orange planet was bending the lower current towards itself.
The smaller world in the middle was opening a second rotation between the two forces.
Yet the movement of the stars within the current did not follow this order.
White lights that should have moved away from the large blue planet travelled towards it, passed beside its edge, and joined the upper wave. Stars within the lower current did not accelerate as they approached the orange planet. They maintained the same rhythm when they reached the curve in the water.
The ocean did not resist the planets’ gravity.
Nor did it follow the directions they appeared to determine.
Another force was moving deeper within it.
When the blue line reached the centre of the great wave, the surface rose. At first, a broad and low curve formed. Then the water began to stand upright within the void. Midnight-blue layers gathered upon one another, pale currents reached the surface, and white foam collected along the edges of the wave.
The stars rose with the water.
The lights held within it did not lengthen into lines. Each retained its own brilliance and travelled at a different depth. One star was carried close to the surface, whilst another burned much farther behind, within the dark water.
In this ocean, depth did not lie below.
It opened between the waves.
The small blue planet within the current turned for the first time. Its dark side faced the water, and a fine white ring formed along its illuminated edge. Several seconds later, a second rotation began.
The planet’s orbit had not changed.
The water passing through that orbit had begun carrying it elsewhere.
The Current That Lifted the Planets
As the tide rose, the calmness of the ocean disappeared.
The midnight-blue waters below joined the great current. Long waves passed over one another, whilst pale blue layers rose through the dark depths. Foam broke apart and scattered through the void, each fragment soon becoming a small star.
The large blue planet left its position.
At first, the movement was too slow to notice. When compared with the stars against the darkness, it could be seen to have descended by several degrees. Then it began travelling left along the curve of the upper wave.
The ocean was not approaching it.
The planet was joining the movement of the water.
The smaller planet at the centre passed through the hollow of the great wave. Blue light touched its surface, and reflections of stars appeared across its darker regions. When it reached the centre of the current, the water formed two separate rings around it.
The first revolved around the planet.
The second was wider and connected with the inner surface of the great wave.
For several seconds, the planet remained still where the two currents crossed. Then one of the rings narrowed. The small sphere rose through the water and settled into a new orbit beneath the blue planet.
The orange world below was moving as well.
The large sphere, which had initially rested far from the ocean, had been drawn towards the lower wave. Its orange and brown bands shone beneath the starlight, whilst small blue droplets revolved through the space around it.
The waves changed direction before reaching it.
The lower current traced a broad arc around the planet and returned to the ocean. Yet when the water came back, the stars it carried had formed a different order. Orange points had appeared among the white lights, and new glimmers burned upon the dark surface of the lower wave.
The tide was not taking movement alone from the planets.
It was carrying their light into its currents.
A low vibration travelled through the waves.
It could not be heard in the surrounding void. As it passed between the layers of water, it gently disturbed the stars near the surface and altered the shape of the foam. With every passage, the wave rose higher and the planets moved farther from their former positions.
The upper wave began folding over itself.
Its pale blue edge passed around the dark opening at the centre. Stars upon its inner surface formed a circular line. White foam stretched into a long trail along the crest.
It was no longer possible to understand which force was directing the other.
Were the planets raising the ocean?
Or was the ocean carrying the planets?
The small blue sphere turned for a third time within the great wave.
Its orbit widened with every revolution.
The tide was not releasing it.
It was preparing the planet for a new position.
The Tide at Its Highest
The great wave rose.
Midnight-blue water formed a vast wall within the void. Pale layers reached the surface, white foam broke around the curve, and the stars held within it became visible one by one.
The crest folded towards the centre.
Within its hollow, the small planet, blue stars, and golden lights travelled through the same rotation. One section of water rose towards the planet above, whilst another joined the lower current, bringing every direction together within a single curve.
The distinction between above and below disappeared.
One star appeared to rise from the base of the wave towards its surface. Several seconds later, the same light could be seen travelling downwards through the inner curve. The small planet rested beneath the upper wave, yet the water above was drawing it towards itself.
The cosmic ocean did not possess a single surface.
Every current carried its own.
The waves accelerated.
Blue lines passed through the dark layers. White foam broke apart. Golden stars revolved within the current. Small droplets scattered into the void and returned as shining points.
Then every movement slowed.
The crest of the great wave appeared to be only a few metres from closing. Yet the distance between its edges did not diminish. Water continued to move, foam travelled along the curve, and stars entered new positions. The overall shape of the wave remained unchanged.
The tide had reached its highest point.
Time was no longer passing at the same rate through every layer of water.
Foam near the surface broke apart quickly, whilst stars in the depths completed slow revolutions. Pale blue currents crossed the curve within seconds. Midnight-blue water took far longer to travel the same path.
The small planet at the centre remained between two passages of time.
Stars changed position quickly across its illuminated surface, whilst a single blue light appeared motionless upon its dark hemisphere. The planet continued to turn, yet the position of the light did not change.
The blue glow did not belong to the planet.
It came from the ocean’s deepest current.
The light expanded and passed through every layer of the wave. First it illuminated the dark waters, then the pale surface, and finally the white foam. Each star briefly burned brighter.
The planets moved at the same moment.
The large blue planet descended.
The small grey sphere approached the centre of the upper wave.
The orange planet moved towards the edge of the lower current.
The small blue world within the water remained between them.
All four planets aligned upon an invisible curve following the shape of the wave.
At that moment, the great wave closed.
Its crest did not strike the water.
It passed through itself.
The stars among the white foam vanished for an instant and reappeared on the opposite side of the curve. The wave completed a full rotation without breaking, scattering, or reaching any surface.
The cosmic ocean withdrew into its own depths...
When the Waters Receded
The pale blue curve of the upper wave withdrew first.
The water slowly descended. White foam separated from the edges and scattered into the void as small droplets. Most became blue lights. A few remained as translucent spheres within the darkness.
The lower current began to slow.
The midnight-blue layers separated. The stars within them returned to their former brightness and appeared still once more in the depths.
The hollow left by the great wave widened.
The darkness returned.
The ocean was not shrinking. It was withdrawing from the layers through which it had risen, returning to its invisible bed in the depths. As the pale surface descended, the stars remained behind in the void one by one.
At first glance, every light appeared to have returned to its former position.
White stars once again burned at wide intervals, whilst golden glimmers rested across the ocean’s surface. The small blue lights around the dark currents had stopped moving.
The planets had not returned.
The large blue planet no longer rested beside the upper wave. The small world at the centre had left its former position. The orange sphere had moved closer to the lower current, whilst the little blue planet now stood between them.
All four rested upon the same curve.
It was identical to the path followed by the great wave when the tide had reached its highest point.
The ocean’s final wave withdrew.
It left no shore, foam, or wet surface behind. Only a slender blue glow remained, passing between the planets. The line extended from one world to the next, bending gently whenever it approached them.
The depths from which the waves had risen became silent again.
The cosmic sea appeared motionless.
One final droplet remained suspended beneath the large blue planet. Within its curved surface, a miniature image of the ocean could be seen. Midnight-blue waves, white foam, and golden stars revolved slowly inside it.
The droplet did not descend.
Nor did it rise.
It shone with blue light and became a small star.
The new star burned at the exact centre of the curve formed by the planets.
The tide had ended.
The planets had not returned to their former places.
Where the cosmic ocean had passed, an invisible shore had formed within space...
