Cosmic Balance
The Boundary Between Two Halves
The boundary passed through the very centre of the circle.
On the left, there was a warm radiance. Yellow light spread through the lower layers of the blue sky and turned orange, tracing the edges of the clouds below with crimson lines. Although the clouds appeared heavy, they were constantly changing form, softening the light that passed through them and carrying it towards the centre of the circle.
On the right, the sky came to an end.
The blue deepened, and the final layers of the atmosphere opened into a space filled with stars. Nearby stars shone gold, while those farther away remained as white points within the darkness. Between them lay vast regions beyond the reach of light.
The line separating the two sides was not straight.
Sunlight sent fine golden traces into the darkness, while night extended its deep blue layers towards the illuminated side. The boundary was not a wall where two colours stopped one another, but a long passage in which each became the other.
At the centre of the circle, the sun was burning.
A yellow core shone between its orange outer layers, and the pointed rays around it reached into both day and night. The clouds illuminated by its light on the left became invisible as they merged with the stars on the right.
A slender pair of scales stood before the sun.
Its left pan was deep blue, its right pan warm orange. Between them was a difference in height so small that it was almost impossible to see. Their supports gleamed as fine lines in the sunlight, while the central beam revealed even the slightest movement.
Above the circle hung a white crescent moon.
Its curved surface faced the centre, while its dark side remained hidden within a blue sphere. Despite sharing the same space as the sun, it did not lose its light and remained silent among the stars.
At first glance, every element appeared to be in its place and perfectly still.
Yet the clouds were moving, the stars were burning, the sun was casting its light and the crescent was continuing along an unseen orbit.
For the scales to remain balanced, none of them needed to stop.
The Side of the Sun
The light on the illuminated side was not composed of a single colour.
Near the sun, the brightness approached white. As it travelled farther, it turned yellow and orange, then acquired a crimson warmth when it reached the clouds below. Every layer carried the light differently.
The thin clouds above allowed the radiance to pass through them. The denser layers beneath held the light and released long golden lines from their edges. Through narrow openings between the clouds, the blue sky remained visible.
Warmth spread outwards from the centre.
First, the space surrounding the sun grew warm. Then a dry heat could be felt across the surfaces of the clouds touched by its light. Farther away, the air remained cool and the brightness lingered only as a pale colour.
Beneath this region, a distant world moved along the curve of the circle.
Its seas shone on the side facing the sun, while cloud shadows travelled across its surface. The other half of the planet lay in darkness. The line between daylight and night slowly changed position across the sphere.
As day advanced, the light entered the realm of night, while darkness returned elsewhere at the same moment.
The sun did not remove the night.
It merely carried its boundary.
Warm air rising above the planet changed direction when it reached the colder layers, driving the clouds along a broad arc. The sky cleared in one region as a new bank of cloud gathered in the distance. Layers emptied by rain grew lighter, while water rising from the seas below returned to the sky.
No movement was completed in isolation.
Light carried heat, heat carried currents and currents carried the clouds. The clouds released rain, and the rain returned water to the surface, where it would eventually rise again.
The orange pan of the scales at the centre of the circle descended slightly.
The movement was so slow that it could have disappeared among the sun’s trembling rays.
At the same moment, the largest cloud on the illuminated side began to cross the boundary towards the darkness.
The Side of the Stars
Beyond the boundary, the temperature fell rapidly.
The orange light first faded to pale yellow, then to a fine shade of blue. Once the atmosphere had been left behind, the soft edges of the clouds dispersed and the view opened into the deep space between the stars.
The darkness on the night side was not a flat surface.
Regions that appeared deep blue nearby approached black with distance, while faint blue cosmic clouds stretched between them. Starlight weakened as it passed through these layers and disappeared entirely in certain areas.
A brilliant star burned in the upper-right side of the circle.
Its golden light struck the surfaces of the smaller bodies around it, outlining their darkened edges with fine lines. The planet nearest to the star moved quickly, while a larger sphere farther away completed its orbit in a slow revolution.
Every planet was being drawn towards the centre.
Yet none fell towards the star in a straight line. As they continued forwards, their direction changed without pause, tracing broad paths that closed around the star. Approaching and retreating, falling and continuing onwards, became part of the same movement.
The orbits could not be seen.
Their presence was revealed when the planets passed through the same dark region with every revolution and the light of the star reappeared across their surfaces.
Farther on lay a vast cloud of violet and blue gases.
Its inner layers were too dense to be seen from outside. Particles surrounding it moved slowly towards the centre, and as the cloud contracted, the darkness within began to grow warmer. No star was visible yet, but an intermittent glow had appeared between the layers.
Far beyond this light, another star was nearing the end of its existence.
Its outer layers had turned red, and it had begun releasing fine streams of matter into the surrounding space. As the star lost its light, fragments separated from it and travelled through the darkness, merging with distant cosmic clouds.
A movement ending in one region carried the material for a new beginning elsewhere.
Yet a different change began within the golden star in the upper-right.
Its light first narrowed around the edges. Then a brief tremor passed through its bright centre. With each orbit, the smallest planet surrounding it moved slightly beyond the path it had followed before.
The darkness was not expanding.
Even so, the distance between the stars appeared deeper than it had during the previous revolution.
The blue pan of the scales descended.
The orange pan did not rise.
Beneath the sun, both pans had moved in the same direction at different moments.
Movement Answered by Movement
A faint tremor spread throughout the circle.
The sun’s outer layers rippled. The golden edges of the clouds on the illuminated side briefly faded. On the night side, the smallest stars began to flicker.
The planet that had left its orbit continued drifting into the darkness.
The golden star pulled it inwards, while the planet’s forward movement opened a new path against that attraction. As its orbit widened, the planet slowed. During its next revolution, it traced a larger arc around the star than before.
The change did not remain distant.
Small fragments of rock passing near the planet altered their direction. Their movement scattered layers of dust farther out. When those particles reached the edge of the blue cosmic cloud, one part of the cloud grew denser.
An unseen centre of attraction formed within the darkness.
As matter travelled towards it, a gradual rotation began around the centre. Fragments that had once been scattered started moving in the same direction, then formed a broad and faint ring.
At the same time, the great cloud that had crossed the boundary on the illuminated side was growing colder.
The droplets of water within it became heavier. Its lower layers darkened, and rain began to fall across the side of the distant world approaching night. When the rain reached the warm surface, a fine vapour rose. The rotation of the planet carried that vapour back towards the light.
Day had left water within the night, and night had returned it to the day.
The sun at the centre trembled once more.
Its light narrowed on the left, while one of the rays reaching towards the night side grew stronger. The ray touched the surface of the planet whose orbit had widened. A fine orange line opened along the edge of the dark sphere.
The planet had not disappeared.
Only its distance from the light had changed.
Matter released by the distant red star also continued its journey. It crossed the darkness and reached the gathering cosmic cloud. The temperature at the cloud’s centre rose. A white glow appeared between its blue layers.
The new light was not yet strong enough to illuminate its surroundings.
But the darkness was no longer complete.
As the two sides of the circle merged, day did not become night, nor did night become day. Each retained its own nature, carrying only the movement required for the other to continue.
The fading light of the golden star appeared at the same moment as the new glow within the distant cloud.
The two pans of the scales swayed gently in opposite directions.
Then the difference between their heights began to diminish.
The Balance at the Centre
The tremor gradually subsided.
Clouds on the illuminated side continued along the lower curve of the circle, and crimson layers became visible once more around the sun. The stars on the night side did not return to their former brightness. A new and fainter light had joined them.
The planet whose orbit had changed did not return to its previous path.
It now travelled around its star in a wider circle. The other planets had also shifted their positions slightly, and the system had settled around their new movements.
Balance had not been restored by returning every part to its former place.
It had continued because the changing movements had found new answers in one another.
The sun continued to burn at the centre of the circle.
Its light filled the atmosphere on the left with warm colours and made the edges of planets and stars visible on the right. The same light became day in one region while leaving a long night behind another world.
The crescent above continued along its orbit.
Its white curve slowly shifted around the blue sphere. The light it received from the sun revealed only a narrow part of its dark surface. The unseen portion had not disappeared; it remained where the light could not reach.
At last, the pans of the scales reached the same height.
Yet they did not become still.
The blue pan rose slightly with the sun’s vibration. When a distant star brightened, the orange pan answered. The supports tightened as clouds crossed the boundary, then loosened again when a planet turned its dark side towards the light.
The scales were not measuring any of them.
They made visible the way light and darkness, warmth and cold, attraction and movement completed one another within the same cosmos.
Inside the boundary of the circle, day and night stood side by side.
Neither side defeated the other, and neither claimed the entire space. Where the light ended, the stars became visible. Where the night receded, the edges of the clouds shone gold once more.
At the centre of the distant cosmic cloud, the new light grew stronger.
At the same moment, the final radiance of the ageing red star spread into the darkness.
One was beginning to burn as the other released its light into space.
The sun remained between them at the centre. Above it, the crescent moved silently through a blue layer filled with stars. For a moment, the slender beam of the scales became perfectly level.
The moment did not last.
A new cloud rose on the left side of the circle.
On the right, a small planet entered the darkened part of its orbit.
The pans began to move apart once more, with a motion almost too slight to see.
Because balance within the cosmos was not a form completed once and left unchanged for ever.
It was the unending answer that every light, every shadow and every distant movement gave to one another...
