Beside the final point were only a distance, a set of coordinates and an estimated arrival time. When the craft left the station, the positions of the stars had not yet changed. But before it reached the first route marker, the lights left behind had already disappeared into the darkness..."
Celestial Route
The First Point on the Route
Forty minutes before departure, the final chart was opened across the navigation table.
The paper was thick. Its edges had softened through use, and pieces of fabric reinforcement were visible at several corners. A metal eyelet sat at the upper-left edge, with a thin thread passing through it and hanging over the side of the table.
At the top of the chart were the words:
NORTHERN SKY CHART
Beneath them was the sector record:
SECTOR: N7
And slightly lower:
EPOCH: 1928.4
The stars were marked as small black points. Some were connected by fine lines, while others stood alone across the pale surface without belonging to any pattern. A copper-orange route crossed the chart.
The first marker lay close to the outer edge. The second sat between several stars. After the third marker, the line turned towards the lower part of the chart and stopped there.
The route continued on another plate.
The large dark chart resting at the centre of the table was opened. Its surface was almost as dark as space itself, covered with hundreds of small stars, circular reference lines, broken orbital paths and fine measurement lines extending outwards from the centre.
In the upper-right corner was the record:

SECTOR: CX-17
EPOCH: 1928.4
The coordinates were written beneath it.
A compass rose on the right-hand side indicated north.
The copper-orange route continued here from the final marker on the N7 plate, entering through the upper edge of the dark chart before descending towards its centre. It passed one point, then another, approached the centre, curved around it and opened outwards again.
Several of the route markers carried small records.

After the final marker, the line continued towards the lower edge of the chart and crossed onto another plate.
The entire route could not be contained on a single surface. For that reason, three separate charts were kept beside one another on the same table. The first showed the region of departure. The second contained the greater part of the journey. The third showed the destination.
The craft was still attached to the station.
Beyond the thick windows of the navigation room, long docking arms surrounded the hull. Maintenance lights left white lines across the metal surfaces, while farther beyond them the stars remained visible.
Motionless.
Cold.
Sharp.
Inside the cockpit, a low engine hum filled the silence. The main systems were already active, and the air from the ventilation system was dry and cool. The metal edges of the navigation console felt cold beneath the fingers.
The first reference star on the chart was located through the optical system. Then the second. Then the third.
The position calculated by the navigation computer was compared with the N7 chart.
The lines matched.
The route was confirmed.
When departure time arrived, the station connections were released one by one. The power line disconnected first, followed by the data link. Then the mechanical locks holding the hull opened.
For several seconds, the craft remained still.
The docking lights outside still filled much of the window.
Then the manoeuvring thrusters fired.
A faint vibration travelled from the seats into the floor, and the station began to move slowly backwards. At first, the first few metres were almost impossible to notice. Then the distance increased.
The docking arms became smaller. The maintenance lights contracted into a single bright cluster.
The craft rotated around its own axis.
The station slipped towards the left edge of the window.
Ahead, only the stars remained.
The first route line appeared on the navigation display.
N7.
The first marker.
Engine power increased.
The vibration deepened.
And the journey began.
CX-17
For the first hour, the station could still be seen several times.
At first, it remained a bright structure. Later, it became a small light. Eventually, it was reduced to a point almost impossible to distinguish from the surrounding stars.
As the craft accelerated along the route, the star field outside appeared almost unchanged. The stars still seemed to remain at the same impossible distances, but the navigation system told a different story.
The first reference point was already behind them.
The opening section of the copper line on the N7 chart had been completed.
The craft was approaching the second marker.
Position values changed continuously across the cockpit displays.
Right ascension.
Declination.
Velocity.
Route angle.
Distance from the station.
Time until the next correction.
The engines maintained a steady thrust for a long period. Their low vibration could be felt continuously through the hull, and loose metal fittings across the consoles occasionally produced faint sounds.
Then the main engine fell silent.
The vibration disappeared at once.
The cockpit became unusually quiet.
The craft was now travelling on the velocity it had already gained. Only the ventilation system and the brief signals from the navigation instruments could be heard.
The star field expanded across the forward window.
After a while, the reference lines of the first chart were no longer enough.
The final marker of N7 was approaching.
The large dark plate on the navigation table was pulled forwards.
SECTOR: CX-17
The second part of the route had begun.
This chart was far denser than the first. Concentric circles surrounded the centre. Stars were marked not only as positions but also as references for distance and direction.
A small β appeared beside one star.
Another point was marked R.
Farther below were the numbered route markers.
As the craft approached the first CX-17 point, a warning appeared on the navigation display.
The route would shift by several degrees.
The starboard manoeuvring thrusters fired briefly.
The hull turned gently to one side.
The star field began to slide slowly across the window. A bright star that had been to the right of centre moved upwards. A narrow stellar cluster drifted towards the left edge.
The compass rose on the chart remained fixed while the orientation of the stars outside changed.
The new route was confirmed.
The craft accelerated again.
As it moved towards the centre of CX-17, the sources of light became more widely separated. Some stars were extraordinarily bright, but the spaces between them appeared broader.
Darkness occupied more of the window.
It was no longer merely a background.
It filled most of the view.
As the craft travelled through it, the copper-orange line on the chart remained the only continuous reference.
From one point to the next.
From one circle to another.
From one coordinate to the next.
The route itself left no visible trace through the darkness of space.
There was no line outside the window.
No marker.
No arrow.
Only stars.
The path existed only on the chart.
Marker 03
As the third route correction approached, the gravitational sensors registered a small change.
Marker 03 on the CX-17 chart was now close.
A new value appeared on the left side of the display. The gravitational pull of a nearby large celestial body was altering the craft's direction by a very small degree.
It was not yet visible to the naked eye.
But the curve of the route had been plotted with this influence already taken into account.
The copper line bent gently at exactly this point.
The main engine remained inactive. Instead, the smaller manoeuvring thrusters fired intermittently.
One second.
Silence.
Two seconds.
Silence.
Each firing sent a brief vibration through the hull before the craft returned to free flight.
After a while, a pale sphere appeared within the darkness.
At first, it looked only slightly larger than the stars around it. As the craft approached, its surface began to emerge.
Light reached only part of it.
Its dark side merged into space while the illuminated edge appeared as a thin, pale arc.
The craft would not pass close to the body. The route crossed the outer edge of its gravitational influence, but the direction of travel would change briefly.
The circular lines on the navigation chart now found a visible counterpart in the motion beyond the glass.
The craft was not travelling in a straight line.
It was following an invisible curve.
The positions of the stars slowly shifted.
The sphere on the left grew for several minutes, then began to move towards the rear of the craft.
The velocity reading increased.
The engines were still off.
Yet the craft was accelerating.
The nearby body's gravity was bending the route and adding a small amount of velocity.
Marker 03 was passed.
Its symbol disappeared from the navigation display.
The next destination:

The orange route on the chart was now opening away from the centre.
The craft was leaving the densest reference region of CX-17.
Another light appeared on the right side of the forward window.
This time it was not a point.
It was a grey sphere that became steadily more distinct.
The destination.
The distance reading began to fall.
At first, the surface showed no detail. Several minutes later, darker and lighter regions appeared.
Craters.
Long ridges.
Broad plains.
Where sunlight struck at a low angle, shadows stretched for kilometres across the surface.
The destination plate was brought onto the navigation table and placed beneath the dark star chart.
This plate showed far more surface than space.
Jagged, irregular elevations stretched along the horizon. A broad plain filled with craters lay in the foreground.
The surface coordinates were recorded on a small card in the upper corner.

LON: E 102° 18'
The final point on the route was here.
Final Approach
After marker 05 was passed, the main engine started again.
This time, the purpose was not acceleration.
It was deceleration.
When the first burn began, the cockpit shook noticeably. Pressure increased against the backs of the seats, while the engine rose into a low vibration throughout the hull.
The numbers on the velocity display began to fall.
The destination now occupied much of the forward window.
Its craters were clearly visible.
Some were small with sharp rims. Others were far wider, containing further impact scars within them and casting long shadows from their walls.
Mountain ranges extended across the horizon.
The Sun was low.
As a result, every rise across the surface appeared more pronounced.
Illuminated regions were pale grey.
The shadows were almost black.
The route line on the navigation display updated for the final time.
The navigation coordinates determined from the stars were now becoming surface coordinates.
The craft completed its orbital insertion.
For several minutes, the terrain passed beneath it.
Craters moved below the lower edge of the cockpit window.
A mountain range appeared.
Then a broad plain.
Then three large craters lying close together.
The terrain drawings on the plate began to find their counterparts one by one.
The landing zone lay just beyond the horizon.
The craft changed orientation.
Its nose angled slightly downwards.
The surface began to rise across the forward window.
Altitude was decreasing.
Ten thousand kilometres.
Five thousand.
One thousand.
The numbers fell rapidly.
There was no atmosphere.
No wind could be heard outside.
No air current shook the hull.
There was only the vibration of the engines.
As the surface grew larger, the sensation of speed increased.
Craters that had appeared motionless at first were now passing rapidly beneath the window.
Below five hundred kilometres, smaller details began to emerge.
Rocks inside the craters.
Broken edges along the ridges.
Fine fractures extending across the terrain.
Farther below, broad plains of dust.
Sunlight illuminated every feature from one side and left the other in a sharp shadow.
The landing route was transferred to the automatic system.
The final line appeared on the navigation display.
The copper-orange path was now only a short arc a few kilometres long.
The last coordinates flashed at its centre.
N 21° 37'
E 102° 18'
The craft moved into a vertical position.
Main engine power decreased.
The lower manoeuvring systems activated.
The movement of the surface beneath them began to slow.
Five kilometres.
Three.
One.
The shapes of the shadows were no longer changing.
The craft was descending directly above the final marker.
Five hundred metres.
Exhaust from the engines reached the ground.
The first dust rose.
Grey particles spread outwards in a ring.
Without an atmosphere, the dust did not remain suspended like a cloud. Individual particles rose along sharp arcs before falling back to the surface.
Two hundred metres.
One hundred.
The lower section of the cockpit window filled with moving grey dust.
The edges of nearby craters briefly disappeared.
The landing legs extended.
Mechanical locks could be heard engaging beneath the hull.
Thirty metres.
Twenty.
Ten.
Engine power decreased.
The craft touched the surface.
The first contact was light.
Then the second landing leg met the ground.
The hull rocked once to one side.
The final leg settled onto the surface.
The engines shut down.
The vibration ended.
The cockpit became silent.
Outside, the disturbed dust was slowly returning to the ground.
For several seconds, nothing moved.
Across the navigation display, the copper route was complete from beginning to end.
N7.
CX-17.
And the final coordinates.
A new record opened at the top of the display.
ROUTE COMPLETE
The arrival time was added.
Then the distance record.
TOTAL: 1,274,300 KM
The actual duration of the journey was entered beside the estimated time.
The line on the chart was no longer only a planned route.
The craft had travelled it.
Route Archive
After landing, the exterior cameras were activated.
For the first few seconds, the image was covered in grey dust.
Then the surface became clear.
A broad plain filled with craters extended ahead of the craft. Irregular mountain ranges stood in the distance, their sharp peaks separated by long shadows.
Space above the horizon was black.
Although the surface was illuminated, some stars remained visible.
A large grey celestial body hung above the horizon.
Slightly higher, a narrow crescent could be seen.
Both appeared motionless.
Gravity inside the craft was very weak.
When the safety harness was released, the body lifted away from the seat more easily than expected. Small movements lasted longer, while an unsecured pen on the table rose slightly before returning to the surface several seconds later.
The three charts on the navigation table were still open.

CX-17 Navigation Chart.
And the surface plate.
The departure point on the first chart was now 1,274,300 kilometres behind them.
The copper route passing through the centre of the dark chart linked every marker together.
The final circle on the surface plate now showed the position of the craft itself.
The mission records were gathered together.
The N7 star plate used at departure was placed at the top.
The small coordinate card was added beside it.
The large dark CX-17 chart occupied the centre.
The compass rose remained on the right.
The copper route entered from the upper edge of the chart, crossed the reference points near its centre and continued downwards.
The surface image was placed below.
Mountains.
Craters.
The crescent above the horizon.
And the distant celestial body.
The copper route continued across this plate as well.
It descended out of the darkness of space.
Passed above the mountain range.
Reached the final circle.
Stopped.
The plates were secured onto fabric surfaces.
Thick threads passed through several edges.
Metal eyelets held the coordinate cards in place.
Small pieces of leather reinforced the attachment points.
The charts were not allowed to overlap completely.
The route remained visible from beginning to end.
Because the centre of the record was not the destination.
It was the entire journey.
The first circle in N7.
The dark centre of CX-17.
The surface coordinates.
And the final marker.
The archive card was prepared last.
At the top were written:
OBS. / ROUTE
ARCHIVE
A small star symbol was added beneath.
The final two lines were left blank.
Several hours after the craft reached the surface, the record was completed.

CELESTIAL ROUTE
The card was attached to the lower-right section of the archive plate.
Outside, the shadows were slowly lengthening.
As the Sun approached the horizon, the dark regions within the craters expanded.
Only the highest ridges of the distant mountains continued to receive light.
The crescent became slightly more distinct.
Pale and dark regions could be seen across the surface of the larger celestial body.
The craft was silent.
The engines were cooling.
Occasional small metallic sounds came from the outer hull.
The navigation system no longer displayed an active route.
Only the current position remained on the screen.
The same coordinates.
The same surface.
The same final point.
But across the archive plate on the table, the beginning was still visible.
The copper line left the northern star chart.
Entered the dark star field.
Passed between the reference points.
Curved within a gravitational field.
Left 03 behind.
Reached 05.
Then descended from the darkness of space towards the surface.
The craft had already stopped.
But the route on the chart still carried the entire journey.

Although the craft has reached its final coordinates, the copper route stretching from N7 to CX-17, its passage markers and the final point on the surface remain visible across the archive plates.
