The Planet Missing from Among the Stars

There had been no change in the planet’s light as it completed its final orbit.

Its orange-tinted surface still reflected the light of the nearby white star. Its dark rings continued to turn around it at the same speed, while its small moons followed the paths they had travelled for countless years.

The stars beyond it were calm.

No wave, explosion or approaching celestial body could be seen in the surrounding space. Although there was no force capable of altering the planet’s motion, the darkness ahead of its orbit was steadily deepening.

First, the planet’s outer ring began to fade.

Then the edge of its illuminated hemisphere darkened. Rather than moving across its surface, the shadow rose from the space surrounding the planet. It did not cover the light from outside. It slowly closed over the distance the planet occupied.

When one of the moons reached the dark boundary, it did not disappear.

It continued on its path.

After completing a full orbit around the planet, it reappeared. Yet the celestial body it belonged to was no longer there. The moons continued to circle an orbit with an empty centre.

A few seconds later, the planet vanished completely.

A circular darkness remained among the stars. The distant lights that should have been visible beyond it could no longer be seen, while faint cosmic clouds approaching the region divided and drifted around either side.

The planet had not exploded.

It had not broken apart or drifted away from its orbit.

It appeared to have been removed from the visible layer of the cosmos.

One of the stars surrounding the empty region trembled briefly. Its light narrowed into a golden line and extended towards the centre of the darkness. Just before the line touched the boundary, it changed direction.

Following an invisible path through the cosmos, it travelled into the distance.

It left the nearby star clusters behind, then passed through blue and violet cosmic clouds. Crossing distances that light would ordinarily take years to reach within only a few pulses, it left slender golden traces behind.

At the end of the path, the darkness changed.

Two golden eyes opened.

The Golden Eyes Open

There was not yet a distinct face around them.

Two golden lights hovered within the dark blue expanse, separated by a fixed distance. The luminous rings surrounding their round pupils narrowed and widened as they followed the movement of the approaching light.

When the slender line from the distant star drew near, a small glow appeared within the right eye.

The lion’s face slowly emerged from the darkness.

First came the pale blue fur across its brow. Then the white around its eyes, the dark contours of its broad nose and the bright fur beneath its chin became visible. Its face was not taking form from starlight. The light was merely revealing details that had long remained within the darkness.

Large, dark ears rose on either side of its head.

Beneath the blue fur between them, small golden points began to glow. Each shone at a different interval before sending its light towards another nearby point.

The lion did not turn its head.

Its gaze remained fixed upon the distance from which the planet had vanished. The expanse was too vast to be seen from here, yet its eyes rested upon the exact centre of the darkness that had opened among the stars.

A low vibration moved through the surrounding space.

It did not resemble a roar. It came from somewhere much deeper, spreading across a vast region before gathering around the lion once again. The light of nearby stars stretched with every vibration, returning to its former shape as the sound diminished.

The fur upon the lion’s forehead parted.

At its centre appeared a small formation of golden lines. Interlocking rings turned slowly, while slender paths between them converged around a single white light.

The line from the distant star reached this centre.

The rings stopped turning.

The golden light within the lion’s eyes intensified. As the darkness surrounding its face withdrew, blue layers opened first, followed by violet and near-black depths.

They were not merely strands of fur.

Stars were burning within the lion’s mane.

The Cosmos Within the Mane

As the mane expanded, the surrounding distances began to change.

The blue fur nearest the lion’s face became dark cosmic currents as it extended outwards. Fine white lines passed through them, revealing another cluster of stars at every curve.

A ringed planet appeared on the right.

Its golden-brown surface reflected the warm light of nearby stars. Individual fragments within its rings could be distinguished, their brightness shifting as the planet turned.

Farther below, a blue planet travelled onwards.

White trails of cloud circled its dark surface, while a small moon behind it appeared and disappeared among the folds of the mane. On the left, orange, white and pale pink spheres moved at different distances.

The planets had not been placed within the lion’s mane.

Real distances lay between them.

One would take years to complete a single orbit, while another approached its nearby star within days. The mane did not compress these distances. It carried every celestial body within its own expanse.

Golden lines passed between the planets.

At first, they resembled orbits. Yet none of them closed around a single celestial body. One began at a star, curved near another planet and continued into a deeper layer of the mane.

A faint light from the missing planet’s moons appeared along one of these lines.

A slender glow separated from the lion’s right eye. It travelled down the golden path towards the lower part of the mane. New stars ignited wherever it passed, and the lines that had appeared disconnected became parts of a single order.

An empty orbit opened at the centre of the mane.

Lines turned around it, while small lights passed near the dark region at regular intervals. The central space was exactly as wide as the planet missing from among the stars.

Yet the planet was still nowhere to be seen.

The cosmic vibration surrounding the lion deepened.

Violet clouds curled through the outer layers of the mane. Blue currents moved towards its face as golden stars flared one after another. Each light reached the next, and the movement returned to the centre of the lion’s forehead after travelling through the entire mane.

Within the darkness behind its head, a curved golden line began to rise.

At first, it was only a slender arc.

Then it widened into a Solar Ring encircling the lion’s head.

The Light of the Solar Ring

Fine markings followed one another across the surface of the ring.

Short lines, interlocking circles and small divisions that redirected the light extended across its golden structure. The pointed rays along its outer edge were not equal in length. Each one faced a different star within the mane.

When the Solar Ring was complete, it did not illuminate all the darkness behind the lion.

Its light passed directly into the mane.

Golden radiance spread between the blue and violet layers. The dark sides of the planets became briefly visible. Dust surrounding distant star clusters glowed, and previously unseen orbits opened as slender lines.

The empty region at the centre of the mane remained dark.

A ray separated from the upper part of the ring and reached the formation on the lion’s forehead. The white sphere within it began to pulse between warm orange and cold blue.

A second ray entered the right eye.

A third reached the left.

The lion did not close its eyes. Golden light circled its pupils before spreading into both sides of the mane. The planets on the right slowed slightly, while those on the left moved more quickly along their orbits. Their separate movements soon joined the same rhythm.

The cosmic vibration descended towards the lion’s chest.

A great star ignited in the lower part of the mane. Golden rays widened around its white centre, forming a vertical path of light that reached upwards. Beginning at the star, the path passed between the planets, divided within the darkness beneath the lion’s chin and reunited within its eyes.

The lion’s mouth opened slightly.

There was no air around it. Even so, the light of the stars within its mane bent backwards. Fine waves crossed the surfaces of the planets, and the outer rays of the Solar Ring trembled at the same moment.

The dark space began to close.

First, the golden lines surrounding it curved inwards. Then a faint orange light rose from the depths of the mane. The light took on a circular form and settled at the centre of the empty orbit.

The missing planet had reappeared.

The mountains, dark valleys and luminous plains across its surface remained unchanged. Its rings turned at the same angle, while its small moons passed the same points along the distant orbits they had continued to follow.

The planet had not returned to its former place among the stars.

It had begun to orbit within the lion’s mane.

The Last Light Preserved

The brightness of the Solar Ring gradually diminished.

As the rays along its outer edge withdrew into the darkness one by one, its golden surface remained behind as a slender circle around the lion’s head. Not all its markings disappeared. Several continued to glow with a low light.

The cosmic movement within the mane grew calm.

The planets settled into their orbits. Blue and violet currents returned to folds resembling fur. The golden paths faded, although the connections between the stars could still be seen.

The missing planet travelled through the lower-right part of the mane.

It was no longer surrounded by a dark void. Small white stars shone nearby, and a golden line passing beneath its rings connected it to the bright star at the centre of the mane.

Its moons, however, continued to circle their empty orbits in a distant region of the cosmos.

There was no visible path between the planet and its moons. Yet at the same point in every orbit, each moon briefly glowed orange. At that exact moment, a responding light appeared within the rings of the planet inside the mane.

The distance between them had not changed.

They simply no longer occupied the same layer of the cosmos.

The lion’s eyes returned to the darkness. The golden rings narrowed, and the stars surrounding its face faded one by one. Its mane did not disappear. The planets within its depths merely appeared more distant.

Before long, only the upper edge of the Solar Ring, the white centre upon its forehead and the two golden eyes remained visible.

The dark region left by the planet among the stars did not close.

Distant lights were still hidden beyond it, and cosmic clouds continued to change direction as they approached its boundary. Although the planet had departed, the trace of the distance it once occupied remained among the stars.

For the first time, the lion raised its head slightly.

Within the light of its right eye, an orange sphere appeared. Dark rings circled it, while a small star illuminated half its surface.

At the same moment, the planet within the right side of the mane shone.

The two images answered one another.

Then the lion’s eye returned to gold.

As the cosmos preserved its silence, a new marking appeared upon the Solar Ring. It was small, circular and not yet connected to any orbit.

Far away, the light of a blue planet circling another star began to fade...
