"The great blue planet awakened as the stars around it began to fade. Within its pink ring, nights that had not yet unfolded beneath any sky continued to turn..."
Celestial Dreams
The Sleeping Planet
Darkness did not reach the stars all at once.
The most distant white points faded first. Then the glow upon the surfaces of the smaller blue planets began to weaken. As the curved boundaries of the cosmic expanse grew darker, the great planet at its centre held on to its light.
Half of it remained beneath a deep shade of navy.
The other half was touched by a cold radiance from an unseen source. Blue layers stretched across its surface in long overlapping lines, turning purple as they approached the shadowed side.
A vast ring surrounded the planet.
It did not resemble a solid orbital belt. Currents of pink, purple and white flowed into one another, while fine lines of light travelled around the planet at different speeds. Their outer layers dispersed into space before an invisible current drew them back into the ring.
The colours changed places with every rotation.
Yet the form of the ring remained unbroken.
Smaller planets hung at varying distances around it. A purple world turned slowly above, while a smaller blue planet moved along the edge of the dark current below. White, yellow and pink stars shone between them.
None followed a visible orbit.
Even so, they all belonged to a silent order centred upon the great planet.
When one of the distant stars went dark, a fine glow appeared across the pink ring.
For a moment, the glow widened.
A blue sky opened within it.
Beneath that sky stretched a pale sea without a shore. The light of two moons lay across the water. Its waves retreated before reaching land, and the dark line upon the horizon moved farther away each time they returned.
The vision closed within seconds.
Its pink light flowed back into the ring.
Then another glow opened.
This time, a white plain appeared beneath the stars. A single dark stone stood at its centre, trembling in rhythm with the rotation of one of the planets above.
That vision disappeared as well.
The ring carried more than light.
It held nights that had not yet been completed anywhere in the distance.
What the Ring Carried
As the planet turned once more, the inner layers of the pink ring began to accelerate.
Brief openings appeared as lines of light passed beside one another. A different sky waited behind each one.
In one, an orange moon hung above the clouds.
In another, a dark blue atmosphere held a shower of stars that never ended. White lights descended from the upper reaches of the sky, only to rise again before touching the surface.
Within a narrower glow farther inside, three planets stood aligned upon the same horizon. Fine silver rings turned around the largest, while a purple star behind them cast warm light into space.
None of these landscapes remained open for long.
The pink current surrounded each one and drew it back into its motion.
Faint lights reaching the outer edge of the ring travelled towards the smaller planets. A glow touching the purple world opened a blue lake within a dark crater. A white line reaching the smaller planet below became a narrow field of stars across its polar region.
The planets did not receive these visions. They seemed to remember them briefly.
When the glow withdrew, their surfaces returned to their former state.
Yet a small trace remained upon each one.
A pink line along the edge of a crater.
An additional white point burning beneath a dark atmosphere.
A blue mark upon the surface of a moon that had not been there before.
The shadowed half of the central planet continued to expand.
As the region touched by cold light narrowed, the ring grew brighter. The landscapes held within its pink currents multiplied, remaining open for longer with every rotation.
The ring strengthened as the distant stars faded.
It was as though every celestial body entering sleep left its final vision within the ring.
The cosmic expanse was silent.
Yet a very low vibration could be felt around the planet. It could not be heard as sound. Instead, it gently stretched the fabric of space each time the ring passed.
The shadows of the smaller planets shifted with the vibration.
For the first time, the distances between them began to close.
Disturbed Orbits
The purple planet above moved first.
Rather than continuing along its orbit, it drew several kilometres closer to the centre. Then it stopped. The pink glow across its surface widened and aligned with the movement of the ring.
The blue world below also changed direction.
Then another followed.
Every planet in the surrounding space was being drawn towards the centre with a motion too slow to notice at first.
The outer layers of the pink ring no longer dispersed into space. Long bands of light curved back towards the planet, disappearing at the boundary of its darkened surface. The skies held within the ring opened one after another, merging with the visions beside them before they had time to close.
The sea beneath two moons flowed across the white plain.
The shower of stars passed through the horizon of three planets.
The blue lake widened, reflecting the light of the orange moon.
Nights that had once remained apart began to gather beneath the same sky.
The vibration grew stronger.
Small stars bent towards the central planet. The light of a yellow star stretched into a narrow line. White points became caught in the movement of the pink ring, drawing closer to the planet with every rotation.
Darkness was no longer merely the absence of light.
It had become a vast boundary closing around the planet.
Star clusters beyond it disappeared one by one. The colours of distant planets faded. The blue edges of the cosmic expanse curved inwards and surrounded the system at its centre.
There was no direction left in which to escape.
As the pink ring accelerated, new marks opened across the surfaces of the planets. Craters upon the purple world began to stretch, while the atmosphere of the blue planet lengthened towards the centre. The invisible pull was affecting not only their orbits, but their outer layers as well.
The space between them narrowed.
The central planet grew larger.
The visions within the ring began to break apart.
One of the two moons above the shoreless sea went dark. The stars above the white plain fell towards the ground. The horizon of three planets divided along a pink line.
The nights held within the ring were disappearing.
Or they were being drawn somewhere deeper...
Where the Dreams Were Drawn
When the illuminated face of the planet became completely dark, the ring suddenly slowed.
Its pink currents remained still for a moment.
Then they began to descend towards the planet’s equator.
There was no collision when the first line of light touched the blue surface. The glow passed through the outer layer and sank into the depths, leaving behind a narrow, dark opening.
The second line followed.
Then the entire ring began to unravel inwards.
Layers of pink, purple and white separated from the planet’s orbit and passed into the dark boundaries opening across its surface. With every descending current, one of the skies within the ring vanished.
The sea beneath two moons closed.
The white plain grew dark.
The orange moon lost its final light.
The shower of stars came to an end.
The smaller planets could not resist the pull. Their rotations slowed as they approached the centre. The pink marks upon their surfaces went dark one by one, and every remaining colour gathered within the shadow of the great planet.
When the final line of light passed beneath the surface, the ring disappeared.
Only the blue planet remained.
Neither the stars nor the distant cosmic expanse could be seen.
The planet stood alone within the void, resembling a dark sphere that had consumed all its light.
The vibration ceased.
All movement stopped.
A long silence began within the darkness.
Then a faint pink light appeared deep inside the planet.
It did not rise to the surface.
Instead, it travelled beneath the crust and encircled the entire world. Fine lines separated from it, forming orbits beneath the dark surface. Within each line, one of the landscapes lost from the ring opened once more.
The sea was still moving.
The white plain still held the light of the stars.
The three planets remained upon the same horizon.
None of them had disappeared.
The great planet had not drawn the dreams into itself.
It had hidden them from the approaching light...
After the Cosmic Dawn
When the first distant star shone again, the dark boundary began to loosen.
Then a blue point appeared.
Then a yellow star.
As the cosmic expanse slowly reopened, the surface of the central planet became visible once more. Cold light touched the edge of its shadowed hemisphere, forming a fine blue line.
But the pink ring did not return.
The smaller planets around it began to withdraw to their former distances. The purple world returned to its orbit above. The blue planet reappeared beside the lower cosmic current. Stars filled the spaces between them.
At first glance, the celestial order appeared unchanged.
Only the space around the great planet remained empty.
Its surface brightened as dawn advanced. The blue lines became clear again, while the purple layers within the shadowed regions faded. The planet continued to turn in silence, as though its pink ring had never existed.
A small world in the distance changed direction.
No ring had surrounded it before.
Now a fine pink line turned around its surface.
The line grew brighter with every orbit. The sea beneath two moons appeared within it for a moment. Then came the white plain, the orange moon and the shower of stars.
The nights preserved within the depths of the great planet were returning to the sky.
Each one reached a different world, left a new trace and waited for the next darkness. None revealed where it had come from. None presented a completed vision.
They carried only fragments.
The sound of a distant sea.
The light of a star that had never been born.
The shadows of planets that had not yet met beneath the same horizon.
As the cosmic dawn illuminated the entire expanse, the central planet began to fade. Its shadowed half disappeared into space first. Then its blue surface became transparent. Finally, a brief pink glow formed around it.
The planet vanished.
The smaller worlds remained in their orbits.
The stars continued to shine.
The pink-ringed world in the distance completed another rotation. A white light passed through its ring and curved out into the surrounding darkness.
The next night had not yet begun.
But the celestial dreams had already found their place...
