When the same signal repeated thirteen minutes later, the survey team had already marked the coordinates. But no instrument could tell them how long the object waiting beneath the rocky ground had been there..."

The Pulse Beneath the Ground

The first signal was recorded during the final hour of a routine surface survey.

The research vehicle was moving slowly across a vast rocky plain. Dark fragments of stone cracked beneath its wheels while fine dust was pushed outwards through the grooves. Jagged mountain ranges stretched across the horizon, without a single light upon them. Above, the stars were clearly visible, while a distant nebula crossed the darkness like a faint copper-coloured trace.

The region had been examined several times before. No unusual mineral concentration had been found, no powerful magnetic field had been measured, and no structure had ever been detected. For that reason, the night's mission was intended only to verify earlier readings.

When the final scanning sequence began, one of the receivers suddenly rose.

Four seconds.

Then silence returned.

At first, the disturbance was assumed to be interference from the equipment. The receiver was shut down, restarted and checked against its reference frequencies. The system was operating normally.

Thirteen minutes later, the same pulse returned. This time, the recording was clear.

The signal did not occupy a single frequency. Several extremely narrow bands had risen at the same moment, oscillated in a distinct pattern for a brief period and then stopped without warning. Between the beginning and end of the waveform was an arrangement that did not resemble random noise.

The vehicle stopped and the antenna was turned towards the sky. The signal weakened. It was directed east, then west, north and south. Nothing.

Then the receiver was tilted towards the surface.

The pulse returned.

This time, it was stronger.

The source was not among the stars. It was beneath the ground.

The coordinates were marked and the vehicle withdrew several hundred metres. The same area was scanned from different angles, but the result did not change. The signal was rising from beneath a narrow region roughly one hundred metres across.

There was nothing visible on the surface that could explain it. Only stones, dark ridges, scattered shallow craters and fine dust.

They waited for the next pulse.

Thirteen minutes passed.

The receiver rose again, recording the same rhythm for four seconds before silence returned.

The Buried Circle

Subsurface scanning began the following day.

The first images were unclear. The upper layer of rock scattered the signal, distorting the deeper sections in particular. But when scans taken at different frequencies were combined, a regular curve began to emerge.

It did not resemble a natural rock formation.

The second scan extended the curve. The third revealed the opposite side.

There was a vast circle beneath the ground.

Nearly two-thirds of it was buried beneath thick layers of rock and dust, while one section lay only a few metres below the surface. At its centre was a denser structure formed from smaller concentric rings.

Before excavation began, the surrounding ground was examined carefully. The layers appeared to have remained undisturbed for a very long time. Fine dust covered the surface, with compressed fragments of rock beneath it and darker mineral layers further below. There was no evidence of a recent impact around the object.

That raised the first question.

If the craft had fallen here, where was the impact scar?

Excavation began at the shallowest point. During the first few hours, only stone and compacted soil were removed. Then a dark edge resembling metal appeared beneath the surface.

Dust was carefully brushed away. The material was almost black, although under direct light it reflected extremely fine copper tones. There was no obvious corrosion, erosion or loss of surface layers.

As a wider area was exposed, the curve of the object became clearer. It was not a dome. It was the outer edge of a circle.

The excavation line continued around it, and several hours later a substantial part of the buried form had been uncovered. The craft was embedded in the surface at an angle. One side rested deeper below the ground, while the opposite edge rose beneath the rock layer and extended towards the open area.

Its hull was covered in overlapping metal plates. Some remained perfectly aligned. Others had fractured and collapsed towards the interior.

Thin lines of orange light could be seen between them.

At first, they were assumed to be reflections.

The excavation lights were switched off.

The orange lines did not disappear.

They were coming from inside the hull.

When the signal was recorded again, the lights within the craft intensified at exactly the same moment.

Four seconds.

Then they faded once more.

The object beneath the ground had not merely survived.

Part of it was still operating.

The Silent Hull

As the excavation area widened, the scale of the craft became easier to understand.

Its circular hull extended for dozens of metres. The upper section had suffered severe damage. Some of the metal plates had been forced outwards, while other sections were missing entirely. A broad fracture crossed one side, exposing the orange light glowing through the inner layers.

Despite this, no entrance could be found.

There was no door, no opening panel and no window.

Most of the lines across the hull connected with one another almost perfectly. The damaged sections revealed parts of the interior, but even there the expected cables, pipes or exposed mechanical connections of a human-made vehicle were absent.

Instead, there were layers of rings.

Metal plates passed beneath one another. Some curved towards the centre, while others continued around the circumference of the hull. Orange light travelled between these layers like narrow veins.

A small fragment was removed from the lower section of the craft and taken to the analysis station. Its density did not fully correspond with any known metal. Its surface temperature was only a few degrees higher than the surrounding rock, yet the energy reading inside the fragment was unstable, rising very slightly at regular intervals.

Every increase occurred at exactly the same moment as the signal pulse.

There was a direct relationship between the system inside the craft and the transmission being detected.

But the signal could not be decoded.

The four-second recording was enlarged and examined in detail. During the first second, there were short rises in frequency. The second section was denser. Across the final two seconds, the waves narrowed at regular intervals before ending abruptly.

It was not random.

But neither did it resemble any known communication protocol.

Repeated recordings were compared. They were almost identical.

Almost.

In some pulses, the final section lasted several milliseconds longer. In others, the central frequency shifted by a very small amount. The differences exceeded the margin of instrument error.

The signal did not appear to be repeating the same message.

There was a slight variation in every transmission.

On the third day of excavation, the team reached the central section. Once the remaining soil had been cleared, another structure emerged at the heart of the craft.

It consisted of concentric rings nested inside one another. Some remained fixed, while others turned extremely slowly whenever the signal began. The first movement was only a few degrees before they stopped.

Thirteen minutes later, when the next pulse arrived, a different ring moved.

At the very centre was a small but intense orange light.

Was the signal being transmitted from here?

Or was the system receiving it here?

No answer could be found. External antennas indicated that energy was travelling from inside the craft towards the surface while, at the same time, a weaker component appeared to return towards the central structure.

The object might not have been transmitting alone.

It might also have been listening.

The Fall No One Saw

To understand how the craft had become buried, the surrounding surface layers were examined again.

A large impact crater was expected beneath the hull.

There was none.

Instead, a long, narrow line of disturbance was detected along one side of the craft. Rock layers had fractured there and been pushed in several directions.

It appeared that the object had not struck the surface vertically. It may have arrived at a shallow angle, travelled across the ground and eventually buried itself within the rock.

Using this possibility, an earlier trajectory was calculated. The line rose from the surface, passed beyond the horizon and continued into space.

Old orbital observation records were searched. Most revealed nothing. But in a low-resolution image recorded years earlier, a brief streak of light was found near the same region.

The image lasted only a few seconds. A bright object crossed the darkness, leaving a long orange trail behind it as it descended towards the horizon.

No known meteor passage had been reported in the region on that date.

But the image alone was not enough.

The streak might have belonged to a natural celestial body. It might have been a sensor error. Or it might have captured the moment the buried craft reached the surface.

The problem was the date.

The image was far more recent than the estimated age of the layers covering the object.

If the craft had fallen only years earlier, how had it become buried beneath such thick, undisturbed layers of rock?

If it was far older, what was the descending object in the image?

The two records did not explain one another.

The excavation team compared the trajectory in the old image with the location of the buried craft. The lines matched almost perfectly.

Almost.

There was a difference of several kilometres, slightly greater than the expected margin of error.

That night, surface cameras were turned towards the horizon. No movement was detected. The stars remained in their familiar positions and the mountain ranges stood silently in the darkness.

At the centre of the excavation site, the circular craft continued to glow with orange light.

The signal returned.

Four seconds.

One of the rings moved, then stopped.

Thirteen minutes later, it happened again. This time, however, a new frequency appeared during the final section of the signal.

It had never been recorded before.

It appeared only once.

Then it vanished.

The Direction of the Signal

On the fifth day, separate receivers were installed to determine the direction of the transmission through space.

The first results were unexpected.

The signal was not spreading equally in every direction. A small part of the transmission rising from the centre of the craft was being directed towards space at a specific angle.

The coordinates were calculated and telescopes were turned towards the region.

There was no bright star in the field. No nearby planet. No catalogued source of powerful radio emissions.

Only a distant star field was visible, with a broad galactic structure appearing faintly much further beyond.

Was that where the signal was being sent?

Or did the line merely happen to pass through the same region?

Longer observation was required.

The direction was calculated again during the following pulses.

It remained unchanged.

However long the craft had been beneath the ground, the signal was being transmitted towards a specific point.

But nothing answered.

The receivers listened for hours, then for days. No return signal was detected.

On the final night of the excavation, something changed.

The thirteen-minute interval passed.

No signal came.

Another minute went by.

Then two.

The system remained silent.

The orange lights inside the hull had weakened as well, and the central rings were motionless. For the first time, the craft appeared completely dead.

The instruments were checked. Every system was operating correctly. The external antennas detected nothing beyond cosmic background noise.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then thirty.

No one at the excavation site spoke loudly. Wind carried fine dust around the exposed edges of the hull, and tiny particles struck the metal plates with a dry, delicate sound.

Then the orange light at the centre returned.

Slowly.

First, a small point appeared. Then one of the inner rings illuminated, followed by another.

The receiver display rose.

But the pulse did not last four seconds.

It lasted eleven.

The waveform was different too. Its first section resembled the earlier recordings, but then the frequency widened and a longer pattern appeared, unlike anything recorded before.

When the signal stopped, the central ring moved again.

This time, not by a few degrees.

It completed a full rotation.

Then it stopped.

The new recording was analysed immediately and compared with the previous signals. There was a resemblance, but it was not the same.

A beginning.

A repetition.

And then an entirely new section.

The narrow transmission directed towards space was measured once more.

The coordinates had changed.

Only slightly.

But they had changed.

The new line pointed a little further east across the distant star field.

What the craft was doing remained unknown. Perhaps it was continuing to transmit. Perhaps it was searching for a response. Perhaps the pulses had never been communication at all.

Hours later, the central rings fell silent once more. The orange light weakened but did not disappear completely.

The craft remained motionless within the open excavation site. The surrounding rock had been removed and much of its hull was now visible.

Yet none of the most fundamental questions about the discovery had been answered.

Who built it?

Where had it come from?

When had it reached this world?

Why had it been buried?

And, most importantly:

Who had it been calling every thirteen minutes for all this time?

Or what had it been listening for?
