Even if no map reveals it, everyone has a cemetery in their memory. Some say it appears in dreams, others wander along its shores during sleepless nights. It is there, when the moon is full and the wind howls as if it were blowing from beneath the earth, that the Root of Night emerges. Its true name is unknown. It is only referred to in ancient texts as "the one who comes before the shadow." Its form changes according to the beholder's fears. But its roots remain the same: a memory nourished by the night. Once, this cemetery was a place where the living prayed and the dead found peace. Until that eerie excavation… A group of treasure hunters, believing that "secrets lie buried beneath the dead," began digging beneath the sacred gravestones. While the moon was still at half-moon, they found a black mass woven like a web beneath a stone. The moment they touched it, the wind shifted. The pickaxe sank into the earth. And the first scream was heard. The earth no longer protected the buried. The earth had awakened. What began that night descended on the town the next day, carried by the wind. When people closed their eyelids, they saw the same dream: A black trunk twisted in the middle of the cemetery, spreading darkness like tree roots across the earth. And always in that dream was a voice: “I am not roots, I am memory. I built you from what you have forgotten.” The villagers sealed the cemetery. Rituals were performed. But the Root of Night never retreated. For it was not a creature, but a reflection of humanity’s sins. Centuries passed, and people forgot. The cemetery decayed. The trees withered. But the roots… the roots went deeper. The Root of Night no longer lived just in a cemetery, but beneath the tongue, within the sound, behind the shadow. Anyone who met its gaze could never speak. For that gaze dries words. One night, a lone traveler camped in these lands. He was fascinated by old maps. As he lit his fire, he noticed the shadows flickering more than usual. He heard whispers. And finally, where the light faded, he saw it. The Root of Night crept between the gravestones. Its body was heavy, like darkness, not smoke. Its eyes glittered, but it radiated no light. The traveler didn't run away. Because everyone knew running was pointless. "What's your name?" the traveler asked. The Root of Night didn't answer. But the next morning, an inscription was found among the stones of the cemetery: "They forgot my name. But I remember everyone." From that day on, the cemetery's name was changed. It was erased from maps. But still, at night, when the moon is full and the wind blows from within... a tombstone moves. And the darkness, extending like a root from the earth, the Root of Night breathes again.
